best.....speech.....ever.

Matt
-----

did GWB go to the James T Kirk school of public speaking?

My issue? All war/terroism talk again....domestic issues were discussed quickly, and he went back to the war again at the end.

I was impressed with the way he dealt with his critics and said Meidcal Coverage needs not to be in the hands of the government, more impressed at those that had the courage to speak against the Patriot Act with their applause, but just felt it was more of the same with Bush.....lots of Rhetoric about domestic policy but I doubt he will do anything to follow it up. No Child Behind? From my understanding that program has taken cuts by Bush's own hand. Economy going up? Maybe on Wall Street - but I deal with the middle and lower class every day on the phone (at least 100 people a day, 5-6 days a week) and things are not getting better for them, and most are still unemployed.

His "it's our way or the highway" mentality in Iraq and all foreign policy is building a world of hate and IMHO putting us in more danger of attacks in this country and abroad. Follow what America says, or we will isolate you just for standing against us, and stand aside as we attack other countries? Won't that put us into the same category as those in the axis of evil - attacking nations and placing their citizens into a state of fear. At this pace, the world will place sanctions against us until we get rid of our munitions. Funny that he has such a policy - after all, this was the candidate back in Nov of 99 that didn't know the world leaders when quized. Go Figure.

Wow, you mean FOX had a camera on Kennedy the entire time?

Ya know, that's really odd because I thought the coverage was provided to the networks by C-SPAN as a pool feed and they didn't show Kennedy all that much. Certainly less than they showed the three invited enlisted folks that seemed rather unexcited by the whole affair.

Wow. The things those guys over at FOX can do. I gotta start watching them more. They seem to know where the -real- story is -- watching the audience and not the speaker. ;)

I don't know how the cameras work, I just noticed a few cutaways to Kennedy during the times he was communicating negative response through the magic art of body language. :)

Indeed, I was particularly taken by the following segments from the speech:

"Some critics have said our duties in Iraq must be internationalized. This particular criticism is hard to explain to our partners in Britain, Australia, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, Italy, Spain, Poland, Denmark, Hungary, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Romania, the Netherlands, Norway, El Salvador, and the 17 other countries that have committed troops to Iraq. As we debate at home, we must never ignore the vital contributions of our international partners, or dismiss their sacrifices."

---and---

"There is a difference, however, between leading a coalition of many nations, and submitting to the objections of a few. America will never seek a permission slip to defend the security of our people."

---and---

"We also hear doubts that democracy is a realistic goal for the greater Middle East, where freedom is rare. Yet it is mistaken, and condescending, to assume that whole cultures and great religions are incompatible with liberty and self-government. I believe that God has planted in every heart the desire to live in freedom. And even when that desire is crushed by tyranny for decades, it will rise again."

He has set the agenda for the year, and it's going to be really interesting since the left is already pandering to the fear: Daschle quote: "In his speech, the president asked us to make permanent the tax cuts already passed. He asked us to create more tax shelters for the wealthy, and he asked us to use Social Security money to pay for it." --- Dude...it's not going to work...no solutions. I listened to the speech and I heard nothing of the sort. Only shrill...a shrill that reached a fever pitch with Dean blowing a gasket last night...good God!
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

Hey - but he mentioned that huge danger to our world - baseball players taking steroids. Now, that is a platform that should turn our economy around.

Then of course there was his very subtle way of saying that gay couples do not deserve the right to be married. I'm glad he allows his religious beliefs to effect the lives of those in the country that don't follow his beliefs.....ignorant and arrogant.

In reality, Bush's statements on gay marriage were focused on the ignorant and arrogant liberal judges in some states who have acted in direct opposition to the will of the people.

I actually like to see the audiences reaction. Even that bizarre outburst by Dean last night is almost appropriate when you saw how over the top the folks in his audience were.

Teddy was pretty good shanking his head, but I enjoyed Hillary more as she gave that wet-towel applause while looking at the floor.

Then they currently don't act on the will of all the people....there are plenty that feel that same sex partners isn't an issue. This is Good Ol Boy mentality in action here....at least we know he will get the KKK vote with that little item

Hey, I normally would not touch the topic. But, to quote the President: "Activist judges, however, have begun redefining marriage by court order, without regard for the will of the people and their elected representatives. On an issue of such great consequence, the people's voice must be heard. If judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process. Our nation must defend the sanctity of marriage.

The outcome of this debate is important, and so is the way we conduct it. The same moral tradition that defines marriage also teaches that each individual has dignity and value in God's sight."

He knows this bodes to be a hornets nest. He is encouraging dialogue and requesting that the conduct of the debate be handle with tact. That's all I got in the big picture. His warning to the judiciary was spot on too.

Same-sex partnerships and gay marriage are two distinctly different items.

He'll also get the votes of most moderates and of course everyone to the right of the middle. Bringing up the KKK is a cute emotion on your part, but otherwise bears no relevance to anything.

Both sides play the fear game.

A basic rule of advertising -- Fear = Good Ad.

Now that I've said that, watch a little TV tonight and see how often it's used.

Wow, you shouda listened a little more closely.

From the transcript on CNN.com
Quote

What the Congress has given, the Congress should not take away: For the sake of job growth, the tax cuts you passed should be permanent.

Quote

Younger workers should have the opportunity to build a nest egg by saving part of their Social Security taxes in a personal retirement account. We should make the Social Security system a source of ownership for the American people.

Now, I'll admit you do have to read between the lines to understand what the second quote really means, but the first one is pretty blatant and easy to understand.

My question about the second quote is how then does he intend to fund current Social Security payouts? Social Security is very much like a Ponzi scheme that relies on current "investors" to pay off people that invested before them. The entire Social Security system is flawed to be sure and if I were a young person just starting out working I'd get behind GWBs plan as quickly as I could, but as a person that has paid into the system for 29 years, I'd like it to be there in some form when I need it. Not that it probably will be, but I'd like to think it -could- be -- I'm still hopeful.
