Computer question: Exchange replacement?

Recommended Posts

I've got a request to bring email in house for some friends. I could take the simple route and setup a Unix box and POP3 or IMAP, but they'd be happier I think if we could setup something similar to Exchange. Specifically looking for a calendaring system.

We're going to run Postfix/SpamAssassin to harvest mail from the internet/intranet, but how to get it to the desktop and present it to the user is the big question.

Ideas?

I use the Evolution client with a regular POP server at home, but it's an outlook clone, not an exchange clone. Novell sells a connector to get it to talk to Exchange.

If you're willing to split out the functionality from the mail client and go web-based the phpGroupware suite might do a lot of what you need. Despite being web based it's pretty slick looking.

You might also want to look at the Mozilla suite with the ical module. Last time I looked it was horribly immature, but that was about a year ago.

I've also heard of kroupware.org, but I've never used their software and I don't know what state it's at.

Unfortunately I've not found any good unix groupware systems. There's a lot of work being done in this area but IMO it's yet to pan out.

My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?

I like Evolution, unfortunately the client only runs on Unix and they don't seem to have a server.

I should have mentioned, that the desktops will be Windows machines. I'll check out Mozilla though. Thanks for the help.

Squirrelmail has some shared calendar plugins. They're ok, but definitely a step down. I have a guest account running that you can log into if you wanted to take a look.

Commercially, Oracle now owns CorporateTime which was the Calendaring system Netscape was bundling with it's browser suite. pretty decent product.

I'd be interested to know what you end up using

Hey Jak, that looks pretty cool.

Maybe you know, maybe you don't... I'm looking at the groupware pricing, if I purchase the groupware product do I have to also purchase the base product? Know what I mean?

Thanks

Jim,

Yeah, the base product drives everything, so you need to include it in the cost estimate. Make sure and size it only for what you need now, because you can easily upgrade later without much penalty. I have been using them for 5 or 6 years and have never been sorry. Their product is solid, they upgrade constantly, they have an easy migration path to enhanced features and they offer excellent support. Also, the way they scale their product, even a small business can afford the product. Hope it works for you.
