ACMESkydiver 0 #1 January 14, 2004 ...I'm having a tonsilectomy tomorrow morning... ick. My doc says NOT to eat ice cream or dairy products (produce too much phlegm)...and NO JUMPING for at least 2 weeks. Boy this wouldn't have been such a big deal if I'd a had these things yanked out when I was a kid, but apparently as an adult, it's actually a more risky (and a lot more painful) procedure. My doc said that I would be in an extreme amount of pain (and he's giving me Codine, thank God!) and he said it would get worse for the 10 days after surgery. He went into more detail, but since it made me nautious just to hear about it, I won't burden you! So who's had it? What was it like? What kinda pain meds were you on? Anybody had a problem with 're-bleeding'? My other doc had hers removed as an adult and had to go back into the hospital right after because she was re-bleeding. They tell me bleeding 1/2 cup of blood or more is normal from the 7th to 10th day after...normal?? Ewww....~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. Rebecca 0 #7 January 14, 2004 Yep, when I was 22, they pulled out my disgusting, walnut-sized, perforated tonsils, and it was the BEST THING I COULD HAVE DONE!!! No strep ever since - hardly a sore throat, whereas before, I'd get strep just thinking about it. It was funny- before the surgery, a nurse asked me to open up so she could get a look at them. Next thing I know, she's calling every other nurse and tech over to look at "the biggest tonsils" she'd ever seen. I had about seven people staring into my mouth, going, "Ooh! ... Dayam! ... Gross! ... No wonder she's here! ..." Yes, it hurt. All I could get down was warmish broth and coldish water for a week and a half. And it was Christmas. However, I did lose about 12 lbs. in that period, and was able to fit beautifully into a little New Year's outfit. All in all, it was a very good experience. Good luck tomorrow!! you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?

I used to get strep constantly, which is why they finally took 'em out. Painful at the time, but wonderful now. ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! I get a Mike hug! Shotgun 1 #9 January 14, 2004 I had tonsillitis when I was in my early 20's, but for some reason they didn't take my tonsils out (maybe because I didn't have health insurance at the time?)... I remember the illness being very un-fun though. Good luck with the tonsilectomy tomorrow! Sorry to hear you don't get to eat ice cream though - I thought that was supposed to be the thing to look forward to after it was done!

ChileRelleno 0 #11 January 14, 2004 I had mine out when I about 14-15, with no complications. It really did suck the first few days but I was young and bounced back witha quickness. chaoskitty 0 #13 January 14, 2004 My doc has been making noises about removing my tonsils, esp after the case of strep I had a couple of months ago. I've had strep about twice a year since I was a kid. Now, after reading your post, I'm SCARED!! Not only because I didnt know it would hurt and bleed so badly, but because you cant talk for so long. I cant work unless I can talk. I'd have to use up a bunch of vacation time, which leaves none for boogies... this doesnt sound good AT ALL! I already had jaw surgery and had my jaws wired shut for six weeks. That sucked!! I think I'm just gonna keep my big nasty rotten tonsils. Oh, but I'm sure you'll do fine! This is the best time of year to not be able to jump for 2 weeks. Say "ahhhhhhhhhh"!
PhillyKev 0 #14 January 14, 2004 I used to get tonsilitis twice a year, but still have mine. My doc said it's ridiculous to yank them out, they used to think they had no purpose and were just a gathering point to infection, but the reality is, they stop infection from getting to other parts of your body. I rarely get tonsilitis anymore, or any other colds.

DTOXX 0 #16 January 14, 2004 OK, here goes my story. I was getting Strep about twice a year. I was 16, it was the end of the summer prior to my junior year in high school and oh yes, it was a brand new school. I checked into the hospital on Saturday morning. I was finally released midday Sunday and started the new school Monday morning. I was unable to talk and for the first 4 or 5 days of school so everyone must have thought I was a mute. Cute girl - "Hi, my names Candy, whats your's. (picture hot girl working over a lollipop for all its worth)" Me - "ahghhhagghjghhh." Cute girl - "Ooh, umm, later freak." (Yeah it was no fun) Since my tonsils were removed I no longer get strep or anything really. ------- D.T. Holder SIMstudy
ladyskydiver 0 #17 January 14, 2004 I was 3 when I had my tonsils removed. Only thing I remember of it was getting to eat ice cream and trying to talk to my grandma on the phone at the nurses station and not being able to talk over a whisper. Life is short! Break the rules! peachsouthern 0 #18 January 14, 2004 Not to worry.....seriously! i just got mine out in October and it was the best thing. i had strep 6 times from the month of june to sept. I was 24 and so nervous for the same reasons you are, plus i'm allergic to latex which always puts a special twist to any surgery. ok here are my recommendations: 1. Save your voice. You are going to feel like you can talk right afterwards, but you are still under so much drugs, you'll end up in more pain. DON'T TALK!!!!! 2. never let your drugs run out!!! You'll get liquid codeine. Good stuff. The first 2 days i was taking it every 3-3 1/2 hours whether i was in pain or not....(never let the pain begin) 3. Stay away from dairy. JELLO was my favorite..orange flavored. You can't have anything red, b/c you are watching to make sure it doesn't start bleeding. Also italian ices or slurpees are good. Mash potatoes with even a little gravy is good, but i wouldn't do that till around the 3-4th day. 4. Get lots of good movies, and paper and pens. Honestly, I love to talk and this was the hardest part! I didn't talk for 3 days at all and slowly began on the 4th. Really don't push yourself to cause you can damage your vocal cords permanently. I was eating turkey and potatoes by the 4th day (had to cut it up real small and chew a lot, but it was better then jello at that point) Your tongue is going to be really swollen and that was more uncomfortable to me then my lack of tonsils. I was back to work in 10 days, and made my first jump 2 weeks after. You'll be great!!!! And its not as bad as they make it out to be, just enjoy the drugs! Good luck i'll be thinking of you tomorrow!!!!! "There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle." - Albert Einstein

I had strep 5 times in one semester of school, I would finish my medicine, and then about 10 days later get sick again. Getting my tonsils out really helped me out a ton! I've only been sick once since my surgery. It did hurt a lot the week or two after my surgery. I was on percocet. My daily routine for the first few days after surgery was take the pain meds, then about half an hour later, I could eat/drink a bit, then I would sleep until it was time to take more percocet. What did help me was that I kept a cup of crushed ice by me at all times. Oh yeah, I didn't have any problems with bleeding or anything after my surgery. They are just going to cauterize your tonsils off, right? Good luck with your surgery! alyson team swooo swooo #
 Join the conversation You can post now and register later.
