Brains 2 #2 January 6, 2004 You are soooo close. Keep working on it. I laughed my ass off because i remember being in the same position. I know it's cold, but put on something tight fitting on your legs and something baggy above. Once you get the feel of it then you can wear almost anything and still nail it. It looks like your legs are washing out a bit. Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.

McDuck 0 #4 January 6, 2004 The only reason I can stand to watch it is so that I can remind myself how much work I still need. My legs? I've seen unused marionettes with more leg control. There's one point that I love, where I seem to almost get it, and then I kick one leg out like I'm going to push off of something to save me. sdgregory 0 #6 January 6, 2004 Hey Duck! It looks like my first attempt too. My second did not go much better. Hell it went worse I corked and then pulled 2500 feet higher than planned. Got a good butt chewing for that one. Lost alt awareness and everything. I have not tried it since but plan too. Let me know how you keep doing. McDuck 0 #8 January 6, 2004 Well, it helps to know that the majority of free-flyers go through this, but it can get fairly frustrating. I'll let you know how it goes. I'm going to work on it more this weekend, either at my home DZ or at ZHills. Kiwi, the music is "Serenity" by Godsmack. The woman who did my video editing put it on there. I'll keep working on it, and hopefully I'll have some improvements to show in the near future. QuoteIf it weren't for the purple jump suit I would have sworn it was me on the film. Once we're all world-class free-flyers, we should have a boogie where we show all of our first-time videos all day and night. It can be quite humbling. Push 0 #14 January 7, 2004 I was like that for almost 30 jumps before I finally got it. Best advice is: get a coach! And don't sweat about it too much -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. McDuck 0 #16 January 7, 2004 I've been looking for coaches, but so far, most of them have been so busy that they only have time to give me some ground schooling. A good friend of mine at our dz, who posts here as Auryn, has been giving me some advice and has offered to do some video jumps with me to help me work on my burgeoning free-fly skills. (whoof! Benadryl really makes you loopy, huh? Damn allergies). Layton 0 #17 January 7, 2004 you know, you might want to look at a sitfly suit with the wings on the sleeves.keeps you upright.im new at sitflying and i aint very good at it either.also i've been told to keep my feet together and that helps with the flailing around.cool video though. Push 0 #18 January 7, 2004 Don't mean to try to teach with my great experience of maybe 40 sitfly dives, 30 of which were mostly flailing. I'm just going to relay what David Brown told me. I asked him about those suits and he told me that they will not teach you to sitfly and are a bad idea. He also said to keep my legs as wide open as I can, that adds stability. I never tried a suit, but I can testify to the truth of the stability statement. This is coming from David Brown, not me. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. McDuck 0 #19 January 7, 2004 That's what I keep hearing too, that if you use those suits to help stabilise early on, you have problems again when you lose the suit. It looks like it's all about practice, practice, practice. I'm up for it. sdgregory 0 #20 January 7, 2004 Legs wide! That is what I've been missing! Damn. Okay Now for my next jump I will do a perfect sitfly! Thanks for that peice of info. I just keep them apart. Wide is the answer huh?
McDuck 0 #21 January 7, 2004 Wide, but not flailing around like empty pants legs. It's remembering to keep control of my legs, not just exerting control on them from time to time, that seems to be my dilemma. At least on this video. Maybe I'll have something better to show after ZHills this weekend.Kevin - Sonic Beef #5 - OrFun #28 "I never take myself too seriously, 'cuz everybody know fat birds don't fly." - FLC Online communities: proof that people never mature much past high school. Push 0 #22 January 7, 2004 Ugh, I shouldn't be teaching, but hey. I found that what really helped me was thinking "stand on the wind" instead of just trying to get into the body position. When I get the sit, I really press on the wind with my legs and stand on it. Run it by your coach. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. McDuck 0 #23 January 7, 2004 Hey, every little bit helps. It's how we all learn in this sport. My coaches all say essentially that: stand (press down with your legs) on the wind. It's just that I tend to A) not trust my body enough, and B) not pay close enough attention to exactly what my legs are doing. If you watch that video again, you can see that there are times when i might have held it if I had just been more aware of what my legs were really doing. Focus is what I need. One of my coaches suggested flying a few dives on my back and concentrating on getting just my legs in the right position on my back, building that muscle memory. Any thoughts on that?Kevin - Sonic Beef #5 - OrFun #28 "I never take myself too seriously, 'cuz everybody know fat birds don't fly." - FLC Online communities: proof that people never mature much past high school. Dagny 0 #24 January 7, 2004 Corky! Thanks for that video...very cool! And LOVE Serenity, great choice! Looks like FUN. QuoteIt looks like my first attempt too. My second did not go much better. Sean, are you learning to FF, already? Am I the only newbie who hasn't done this, yet? I want to FF, too, but everyone tells me to get good belly skills first, so I'm doing RW for now. Not that I mind, RW rocks! But, it seems like so many new skydivers transition to FF very quickly. Push 0 #25 January 7, 2004 Glen would kick my ass if he saw me do this From the video it looks like you're not agressive enough. The sit is not a naturally stable position and it feels very different from an arch. Imagine a hill and a valley. If I put a ball in the valley, it will roll down to the bottom all by itself. That is an arch. If I put a ball on the hill, I can make it still but it has to be in perfect balance and is easy to disturb. This is the sit. This means that you need to be agressive to stay in the sit, whereas in the arch you could literally go to sleep and stay there. It looks like you're not agressive enough with the way you enter the sit, and you're not agressive enough with your legs when you do get it. Your legs are almost straight most of the time. Just swing them into the wind and press, spread wide, and tense them up. One of the things that really helped me is practicing the body position on the ground. It's impossible to explain over the net, so it's best to just ask a coach. The practice position doesn't look like you're in a sitfly. You're standing with your legs wide open, knees slightly bent, torso straight and arms to the sides. Your coach will then shake you every which way, and if your legs are tense, you won't go anywhere. I found it almost impossible to be aware of my legs when I was just learning, so the practice really helped. I imagine that those few dives on your back would have a similar effect. Just make sure you get video, you want to build the right muscle memory. Anyway, that's it. I'm not gonna teach anymore, no, really, I promise Every person is different and what worked for me may make it even worse for you. Listen to the licensed and trained coach first and always run these things by them. I know you know and understand all of this already, it's just the standard disclaimer. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy.
