According to the NIH, it's more deadly than guns, cars, and cigarettes combined here in the US.
And methinks it's more deadly when you are high on coke and pcp and attack a cop.

QuoteAlthough they did use some "Unorthodox" batan strikes.....
When I first watched it, I had the same thoughts...Then he gets up and starts swinging more... Three double fisted, straight in, end of baton strikes and he gets up and is still swinging.
IMHO, those officers used a considerable amount of restraint in not using their guns.

I thought an enlarged heart was related to heavy drinking, exposure to certain toxins, viral infection and oddly enough, marathon running too.
My father had an enlarged heart from a virus, had no idea and went in a matter of seconds one night. Chest Xray woulda diagnosed it.

I remember getting hit with the end of an aluminum bat like that once, and it was all I could do to get to my knees and stay in the fight.
And people wonder why the cops hit King so many times. The bruises look bad later, but he probably didn't even notice them when he got them. Too bad PCP fries your brain, because it does some amazing stuff to your body.
[postscript - no, I've never tired it, and yes, the guy who hit me went to the hospital]

This gentleman didn't follow simple directions, and then he decided to get physical...a poor decision. If he wanted to be treated otherwise, he should have acted differently.

Yea, I thought it was interesting to compare how CNN and FOX phrased the first paragraph of the story.

Compare and Contrast:
"A 350-pound man who died after being beaten by police..."
vs
"The mayor of Cincinnati said a videotape shows police officers were defending themselves..."
Leaves a slightly different taste in your mouth, doesn't it?

I think that he he died from stupidity.

QuoteI was hoping someone would pick up on that. I used to do the same thing with papers when I lived in DC. Same story - different story kind of thing.

Come on now.....look at the full first paragraph that you posted:
CNN
...they tried to subdue him had an enlarged heart, and cocaine and PCP in his system, the Hamilton County coroner's office said Monday.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FOXNews
...used metal nightsticks to repeatedly strike a 350-pound black man, who later died after the confrontation Sunday.
Now it looks like CNN is on the cops side and FOX is not. Selective editing can make anything look the way you want (see the Bowling for Columbine thread).
As to the topic, I saw the video. His death was an accident as a result of the force necessary in order to stop him. Shooting him probably wouldn't be justified since he wasn't armed, but if there were only one cop there, I wouldn't blame him if he did.

I assume everyone reading that read the opening post. I just took the first few words to avoid retyping the entire thing. Funny that you automatically thought I was going after CNN. Have a bit of reputation, do they? And you realize I am the same Kennedy from the BFC thread, right?
If you think my comment on reporting from one side is off, read both articles in their entirety. Neither came through clean with the facts. From what I saw in their first offerings, FOXNews immediately went on the defensive, arguing for the boys in blue, while CNN was about two steps shy of Al Sharpton's press release.
Both seek to present a conclusion, then back it up. It's been a long time since a journalist reported "just the facts."

QuoteThey both seem to say the same thing to me. A guy with pcp and cocaine in his system was beaten by police in an effort to subdue him. He died later, cause of death unknown. The mayor defends their actions, the NAACP is condemning them. The stories are almost identical.
The facts are almost identical. The stories aren't. I think your intelligence has conditioned you to automatically scan through the bullshit. Also, when I wrote that I had just watched CNN's report and a re-airing of Hannity & Colmes or O'Reilly. That added to the differences. Point remains both seek to present a conclusion backed by facts/events.

I truly hope you mean that only in the sense that when you attack police officers you are going to be restrained by force.
