billvon 2,991 #128 January 5, 2004 > People who use "strong temper" or "huge temper" to mean that the > person is bad tempered. Temper is not anger! Someone with a > strong temper is not easily angered. Agreed, but someone who has a quick temper is easily angered, and someone who loses their temper becomes angered. "Temper, temper" is a common expression used to warn someone who is becoming angry. I think most people therefore equate temper with anger. >Oh yeah, and people who refer to December 23rd as "Christmas Eve, Eve". As currently used, that usage is correct (although awkward.) Eve is defined as the evening or day before another day; the eve of an eve is the day before the day before an event.
FallRate 0 #129 January 5, 2004 1. A state of mind or emotions; disposition: an even temper. 2. Calmness of mind or emotions; composure: lose one's temper. If you think of temper as it applies to metallurgy, then you can simply think of it as "hardness" (simplified). And this is essentially how it is applied with people. When people lose their temper, they have lost their "hardness" or "toughness". As much as we are led to believe that those who exhibit anger and rage are tough or hard, it's actually the person who can retain control of their emotions that is a stronger person.
