carry on, although i'd definitely put it in a gear bag now..

once on a SW flight i was talking to the stewardess who had seen my shirt and saw the rig as i was putting it in the overhead bin..during her preflight..

"smoking is not allowed on SW flights however if you require a cigarette we, will be happy to provide you a seat on the wing....no the skydiver in row 9 cannot volunteer...so put your hand down..(i hadnt moved, but got a huge kick out of it..)

I carry on, and I always carry a copy of the public release on the TSA website which states in very plain english that "Skydiving rigs with or without AAD's are acceptable as carry on or checked baggage". The release also further states that all measures will be taken to inspect the rig WITHOUT opening it. I also try to find the airlines policy for the same (generally posted online) and carry a copy of that as well.

I do recommend carrying everything in a gear bag.

carry on if I am leaving to jump... sometimes I check it when I fly back home. An advice was given some time ago, and tested it yesterday. Ask to check your luggage as Last Luggage... The plane won't leave without the last luggage...

I carry my rig on and have it in a gear bag.

I, also, make sure I have the TSA documentation, my Cypress card, and any other documentation that I can get my hands on.

Sometimes you get TSA people who have a clue...other times, you get morons. :S Just make sure you're at the airport early and be prepared. It's always better to have to wait a little while to get on the flight than miss your flight 'cause TSA people were morons.

Carried it on twice - no problems either time - most of the TSA people know what is up.
They even asked if I had a Cypres or equivalent as I was leaving Phoenix. Just let the screeners know in advance before you put it on the x-ray belt.
I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama
