flyangel2 2 #2 December 26, 2003 QuoteBritish Foreign Secretary Jack Straw spoke to Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi and offered the services of two specialized search-and-rescue teams. Kharrazi welcomed the offer, and arrangements are under way through the Department for International Development, Straw said. Glad to hear that this is under way.May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds. - Edward Abbey

quade 4 #10 December 27, 2003 Quote 6.7 quake > Densly populated area > California > 2 dead 6.7 quake > Densly populated area > Iran > 20,000 dead Yes. Almost identical earthquakes on the Richter scale, however with drastically different results. Bam was not heavily populated. Only about 80,000 people lived there. As many as 40,000 are now feared dead. Most of the city had been built hundreds of years ago, some parts perhaps as long ago as 2,000 years.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
Darius11 12 #11 December 27, 2003 It is very sad. The problem is if you are not in one of the major city’s in Iran every thing is from another century. People in Tehran have every thing we have here and only 200 miles away there is places with out phones and paved roads. My prayers are with all who have suffered a loss.I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain
Push 0 #12 December 27, 2003 The numbers are so huge that it's impossible to even imagine. Unfortunately, construction in those parts will not improve, even after this. Noone is going to rebuild all of those ancient buildings. It's only a matter of time before this happens again. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. As many as 40,000 are now feared dead. Most of the city had been built hundreds of years ago, some parts perhaps as long ago as 2,000 years. From a technical point of view the Richter scale is not a very satisfactory way of measuring the destructive potential of earthquakes, since it doesn't differentiate between different modes of motion, some of which are far more destructive than others. It also doesn't account for differences in soil and rock types. Regardless, modern building construction methods are clearly superior....
