TomAiello 26 #16 December 22, 2003 Anyone have info on damages (if any)? I've got family about 20 miles from the reported epicenter. All I'm getting on home, work and cell are various "your call did not go through..." recordings.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
lawrocket 3 #17 December 22, 2003 I dunno, Tom. I know the area well. The other problem is that it is prime tsunami and lanslide territory out there on the central coast. Yikes! My wife is hotter than your wife.
skybytch 273 #18 December 22, 2003 QuoteThe other problem is that it is prime tsunami and lanslide territory out there on the central coast Yeah it is. And there's way too many houses through Cayucos, Cambria and San Simeon with nothing between them and the ocean. Those of you with access to TV.... please keep us up to date. I'm worried now. quade 4 #19 December 22, 2003 Damage should NOT be bad. 6.5ish earthquakes will wake you up, but rarely bring much off of walls and definately shouldn't cause any building damage. This earthquake took place some 7ish kilometers below the surface which accounts for the long, slow rolling motions. The phone system is probably just jammed up with people trying to call. Something that people -shouldn't- do after an earthquake, but is human nature so a bit understandable. I'll be monitoring the TV for a couple of hours. If I hear any reports of damage, I'll let you know.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
Michele 1 #20 December 22, 2003 Felt it here in Burbank. Long slow roller, really gentle. I thought I had gotten dizzy - really like a head rush, or standing up too fast. The cats didn't do anything unusual. I was on the phone when it happened, and didn't even realize it until I saw the news. Big one...damage reports are pretty scarce right now. All the general emergency procedures are in place. More as it comes. More: Report out of SLO...slooooooooo rocking. Damage to things, not people. Probably a slip fault rather than a thrust fault (thrust being the Loma prieta, Northridge). lawrocket 3 #21 December 22, 2003 I know that power is out in Santa Maria, about halfway between my beloved Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. But, it was also described as a quick shock for a couple of seconds that stopped and then was slow rolling for a while. There is damage. That I know (broken lamps, etc.) The jolt and rolling seem to indicate the distance between the P and S waves, as well. It'll be a doozy, but hopefully not too bad. Certainly not as bad as Loma Prieta or Northridge. My wife is hotter than your wife.

lummy 4 #23 December 22, 2003 a DOT NUMBER means 1/10 of strength If I remember correctly.. So a 7.0 would be 100 times stronger than a 6.0 a 7.1 was what hit San Francisco Bay area in 89. The Northridge in SoCal was a 7.0 IIRC QuoteLong slow roller, really gentle. I thought I had gotten dizzy - really like a head rush, or standing up too fast. That's how I felt at first with the 89 quake, kinda woozy. Then the big rolling hit and I knew what was going onI promise not to TP Davis under canopy.. quade 4 #24 December 22, 2003 P and S waves travel at different rates so yes, if you can feel the difference between the two you can get a feel for how close it was. Sort of like lightning and thunder.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
skybytch 273 #25 December 22, 2003 Just talked to my mom in Southern California. They didn't feel it, but there was a report on the TV as we were talking. Cambria (11 miles from epicenter) has minimal damage - stuff knocked off walls and shelves - but no reports of anything major yet.
