What kinda pets did you have growing up????

Recommended Posts

Rats make wonderful pets. For some reason people have fear issues with them, though... I think its the tail.

They're much more social than hamsters or mice, and much more intelligent. As a hamster ages, it will typically get very anti-social, and bite often, no matter how well it is socialized as a baby. A rat won't do this. Its because hamsters are solitary animals, and rats are social animals. Rats are better when kept with at least one other of the same gender. They're also much cleaner than other rodents.

I have two rats right now, and they're wonderful little friends. I got them after a co-worker brought them in to work. I spent half an hour playing with them before Carl told me they were going to be snake food. So, I did something typically female, and brought the cute fuzzy little ones home with me. They are house trained, so no worries about accidents with them riding in a pocket or sitting on my shoulder. They scare the shit out of my cats, which is hilarious, because they're really small for rats, about hamster size, and aren't going to get much bigger.

yeah Teresa was awesome.. a friend of the family found her as a little baby, and took her in and fed her, kept her until she was about a year old and gave her to me, and i had her for about 4 years.. man it was always a trip to watch her walk in the woods, totally in her element. Very intimidating but always very playful and protective of me. We had to eventually put her down because she attacked a few people and was starting to have health problems. My next dog is going to be a husky. those dogs are gorgeous.

A stray dog named Sam, then years later a stray Siamese cat named Sam. We're such a creative family. :P

Edit: Then my younger brother named his daughter Samantha!

Usual Pets: Cats, Dogs, Horses, Cows, Donkeys, Birds, Fish, Pig, Chickens

Unusual Pets: Peacocks, Armadillo, Skunks

Can ya tell I lived on a farm????:D:D

Sounds kinda like my upbringing except replace the armadillo with raccoons.

We used to have wild coons come up to the back porch & eat all the cat food, but never were they pets. My baby armadillo was named Lonestar! Such a cutiepie!

My brother and I raised birds that were injured that were going to be put down....this birds wing was busted so we took it in, cared for it till it died a few years later. He was super cool....took him a lot of time for him to realize we meant no harm....

I have also had numerious rats, and mice......they usually dont live to long after entering my house....maybe I should get rid of the python...:PB|

Nice to know I'm not the only ratter out there, Kris. Growing up I had some fish for a while (guppies and the like) in a 10 gallon tank and there were always 1-3 miniature poodles cruising around.

After I left home I had two boxers, just put down a dachsund, have a 60 gallon aquarium with African cichlids (Malawis for those who care) and last weekend we picked up three rats (will get a fourth soon).

Blue skies and happy landings!

Oh, the pity response from KB (ok, I'm not proud, just bored)

A dog named Cat. She rocked even if she was a mutt. Another Dog named Rebel. Beautiful Weimeranner (sp?).

A cockatoo named Hawkeye.
Two Parakeets (cannot remember their names)

A Python.

A few dozen tropical fish till I shattered the fish tank with a stray billiard ball. What a mess that was. Just flushed em. Too much work anyway.

The only rabbits and rats/mice we had were used to feed the Python. That was always fun to watch.

OOH and I had a pet rock!

I raised a baby magpie that fell out of his nest, and taught him how to fend for himself, instead of keeping him dependent on me. He would fly around the neighborhood and come to me when I whistled to him. Eventually, he flew off to be with other magpies. He was the COOLEST animal friend I ever had...if you don't count the time I spent training big cats (lions, pumas, leopards, tigers). B|

Man, I can't name them all.

I used to breed small lizards like white stripe geckos, leopard geckos, anoles, etc. for a pet shop when i was in junior high. Other than that I had 2 dogs, 1 cat, a turtle, and I had some hamsters when i was a little kid.

But my favorite of all was my beloved Brutus, an American Alligator. He died about a year ago...:( He was the friendliest alligator in the world, never tried to bite anyone, not once. He LOVED attention, even took well to strangers. He loved to roll over on his back so you could run his belly. Aw... *wipes tear from eye* Rest in peace, big guy. [:/]

cats, dogs, rabbits, mice, rats, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pig, squirrel, pigeon, raccoon, horses, ferrets, parakeets - I hated those damn noisy birds and tried to give the cats the opportunity to eat them, many wild injured birds (much nicer than parakeets) & mice being rehabilitated some because of the cats, chickens - weren't really pets... I think that's about it.
