Marz 0 #1 December 19, 2003 "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer? I just finished it. It's disturbing to say the least. And they call us skydivers crazy!!!!! Marz _________________________________________ Did I just kill another thread?

flyinghonu 0 #6 December 19, 2003 Yes. I Loved it even though its was disturbing. Another good one by the same author Into the Wild. Also fairly disturbing but the same great writing and feel of adventure. Happy reading... "Excuse me while I kiss the sky..." - Jimi Hendrix

usedtajump 1 #8 December 19, 2003 Read it a couple of years ago and it was indeed disturbing although inspiring as well. The aircraft charter company I worked for at the time flew Beck Weathers, the doctor who lost several body parts to frostbite, to some speaking engagements about five years ago and he truly was a very nice person. Kinda hard to look at but a real nice guy.The older I get the less I care who I piss off.

Marz There's another one about it called "The Climb" by Anatoli Boukreev. Tells a pretty different story than "Into Thin Air" does. Both are really great reads. Different in which way? I know that "Into Thin Air" mentioned a difference of viewpoints between the two but didn't get very specific. Think I'll have to read "the Climb".The older I get the less I care who I piss off.

If you've read "Into Thin Air" you'll definitely want to read "The Climb". 'Shell'Shell

I was looking at a website (i think it was mountainzone or outside online) where Boukrieev (sp?) responds to Krakauer and he responds back. Sounds like those two have issues to work out. Reading that book made me realize a phenomenon that seems to develop in small tight-knit communities - EGO and pissing contests between people. I was relating this to DZ behaviour a little bit, maybe not to the same extent or with the same consequences, but he principles are sometimes the same... I'm actually thinking of going out to buy "the Climb" today to read on the plane when I fly down to Florida. I rented the VHS version of the IMAX movie just to get a visual idea of the different places he talks about in the book. Pretty unforgiving place!
