What makes a skydiver a skydiver? AKA be nice to the tandems

Recommended Posts

Most interesting, the passionate the objective and the philosophical views on this subject!

I often wondered in my first couple years I was jumping the very question....

Q: When could I say, "I'm a skydiver?"

-Was it to make a jump-number milestone?

-Time in the sport?

-License / ratings?

-titles, awards etc...

Quote

I would call you a skydiver...you are injured....Thats a big difference than some tandem student that will never jump again

I know this girl, with a dubious nick-name that might be considered a personal attack here. She started jumping back in the early seventies, and has always maintained close ties with the skydiving community, Geez, she lives a five minute walk from the dz. Works in the industry very often and is often called upon to be the jump dummy for tandem master re-certs. Which, are the only jumps she is permitted to do anymore.

Anyway even though she holds a license, she is banned from skydiving at this particular dz, and probably any other dz that knows her. Why, one might inquire?

So she doesn't kill herself or somebody else!

Ya know, I don't know whether she would call herself a skydiver to tell the truth? Her passion for the sport is obvious to anyone. Her license was issued before many people on this site were even born. Her knowledge rivals any poo-bah here.

So what would you call her Ron, Tree? Cause I am vexed actually.

-I'm thinking, a very baaaad skydiver that's barred from jumping. That being the case albeit still a 'skydiver' but a very baaad one that is banned from jumping. So if then she a former jumper, is she still a, 'skydiver?'

I wear my pin necklace because it means something to ME, not because of whatever someone else might think of it.

I bought it after my first AFF jump. That first AFF jump was the biggest step I've ever taken in my life, and I did it all by myself. I didn't know anyone at the DZ, but I knew skydiving was something I HAD to do, so I went and did it.

My pin necklace doesn't so much as represent "skydiving" but it represents something so much bigger... my ability to conquer my own fear.

That's why I wear it.

Fact is there are several folks on here that HAVE NEVER jumped! And several others than NEVER plan to.

Yup, that's me I'm afraid. Never made a jump. However, I have one booked, and I can see why you all find it so great.. I'm intoxicated with the thought and apprehension.. shame it's a few months away yet!

No, of course, I dont call myself a skydiver. Not even a beginner. I admit wholeheartedly to being a newbie. However, I'm no whuffo.. I know what I want to do and why. Well.. that is until I get to the door on jump #1.. things may change (I hope not!) ;)

I dont see the point in pretending to be someone you're not. That's why you wont find me posting in the skydiving forums until I've done a jump or few.. I'm an utter beginner, simple as that. But I dont mind admitting that.. everyone has to start somewhere. Every single person on here, without any exception, has been in my shoes (or similar ones at some point) - so what's to be ashamed of?

You all seem like nice chaps (and ladies).. hence why I'm still here ;)

So thanks, for that. I'm just glad it isnt like some other sports I've tried, where it's terribly elitist, and where you get looked down upon from every other player/member. It's nice to find something different.

I consider someone a skydiver if they finish complete AFF

.

Guess I'm not a skydiver yet, although I had to deal with line twists and am still recovering from a 'skydiving' injury from jump number 8. I'm sure I would have completed AFP if I wasn't grounded. :( If I have the guts to back up next spring, then I guess I can consider myself a skydiver.:S

Bwhahahaha!!! What DZ do you jump at? I wanna go there one time just so I can look down on everyone like people have looked down on me as I am growing up in this sport :D There are more egos in skydiving then there are in politics.

I hung around and jumped when I could, I always felt welcome. It wasn't untill my AFF grad jump, a sunset load, that I felt like part of something. As I filled out my log book it came over the loud speaker from manifest (ladies and gentlemen there is now one more of us say congradulations to our newest AFF grad Marc Krieger) it may sound corney but that is what did it. After that I felt like I was a real skydiver. I know I have a long way to go but I'm learning.
I know that to the real skydivers I'm just another pesty student but know ones ever made me feel that way.

Until your life is in your hands out there, you're a student.

I'm still an aff student. On my level 3, on the release I went into a spin that I couldn't stop. My JM could not re-dock with me. I was on my own. Once under canopy, my radio failed, I was on my own and I landed not only in one piece, but within 50 yards of the target.

I may have been a student, but trust me, my life was in my hands.

Sorry, I'll rephrase that :P

Yes, it's terribly elitest.. afaik. But the people arent all 100% arrogant bastards either. I've been made to feel welcome by the people I've met, and had questions answered. I've not been told to get lost, or leave people alone, or generally treated as if I'm not worth their time.

THAT is the element of this I like. Perhaps I've had a shaded view of it.. but alas it's how I've seen it so far.

Edit: This is what I meant to type last night. However, one too many guinesses... :S

Personally I don't say I'm a Skydiver...I tell people that I skydive.

I think it is very simple to say who is and who is not.

If you do it you are a skydiver.

If you did it you will be a skydiver.

If you plan on doing it, you will be a skydiver.

If you did a Tandem once 5 years ago and claim to be an expert...Your a DZ.commer;)

I think anyone who wears those pins is a poser, "real" skydivers included. Of course, that's just my personal reaction to people who have to show off how stinking cool they are, combined with how stupid I think those necklaces are. I've never cared for shark's teeth necklaces either

Well, I guess Im a "poser" huh?

I only have 3,000 jumps and 10 years in the sport.

No I was supporting new jumpers 100%... I think its EVERY experienced jumpers DUTY to jump with new people to help them along. That is how I learned when I started jumping.. expereinced jumpers taking me under thier wing... and teaching me what to do and what not to do. ;)

You can have 15,000+ jumps, a bundle of World records and gold medals, but unless you have a coach rating you are unqualified to do a 2-way with someone with 24 jumps.

Same here. Don't think I've ever said, "I'm a skydiver". I've told people that I skydive, but that's different.

Skydiving doesn't define who I am. Who I am is a thrill seeking, adventuresome person who enjoys life and all it's varied experiences. That's why I skydive.

Fasle a local S&TA can waive that at a USPA GM DZ. You don't have to do squat if it is not a USPA DZ.

Plus I never had a coach rating and I can jump with folks all day long...Im an Instructor.

Wow Nick, 106 posts and no jumps??? tsk tsk. What's keepin' ya?!?
lol, just kidding. Obviously, you'll find a plethera of non-skydiving discussion topics here... you don't need to have a thousand jumps to post. I have found this group very very welcoming, helpful and informative.

Oh yeah! This is what I wanted to coment on. You'll find the people you meet in this sport are wonderfully hospitable... but one thing you will likely will run into is 'Newbie Blues' or "post-self-super blues". There have been a number of threads about it and a few pretty cool articles. Basically, after having finished your progression and you are cleared to jump solo, one may feel left out or even a little lonely in the sport. Everyone's got their own things goind on, people are jumping together... but nobody is doing anything with you.

Don't be discouraged by this... it isin't really that 'eletist' mentality. It's more 'cause people don't know you yet... or don't know what you're into... or simply want you to have more jumps before they get into the air with you (which may seem eletist at first but... well, safety first! lol) You'll never find snobs at the bondfire. You'll never have problems seeking advice. You'll never find a lack of enthusiastic peole to talk to when the beer light comes on.

I just wanted to post this as an early warning because of what you had said. Almost everyone has gone through it so you won't have any problems finding info and help. Developping your freefly skills, er I mean skills in the discipline of your choice will come with time and jumps and yadda yadda yadda...
