That is SO cool. You're going to LOVE it. I was just talking to my sister and her family about alternative schooling last night. My sister home schools her children and used to be a monasory school teacher. We were talking about how wonderful alternative schools can be. I would love a job like that!

Regardless, even though I know you'll be heading home full of smiles from a wonderful day.......

Alternative Schools - Overview

An alternative school is a public school within a school district that has its own principal, school building, and budget and is established to serve the needs of a particular group of students, e.g. those considered to be at-risk of dropping out. The classes are usually smaller and focus on a more hands-on, relevant approach to learning with an educational program leading to a high school diploma or GED.

DEFINITION: A separate school, within a public school district and with its own principal, which offers an educational program leading to a high school diploma or GED. To qualify as an alternative school, the program is designed to meet student's individual needs and includes the minimum course requirements approved by the State Board of Education.

In contrast to an alternative school, a school district may include an alternative program as part of the curricula at a traditional middle school, junior high school, or high school.

The school district I was in for high school had two alternative schools... El Camino, which was the "continuation school" for kids that couldn't deal with regular school stuff, and a school within a school at El Dorado, which was for pregnant teens and mothers.

Alternative school doesn't just mean for behavior problems, but it usually refers to "at risk" kids... kids who, for some reason, are in danger of dropping out. However, there are also alternative schools that focus on kids with special talents. Troy Tech specializes in kids that are gifted in math and science and are planning on going into related majors in college. OCHSA (Orange County High School for the Arts) focuses on kids with special talents in music, dance, and visual arts. They're special schools that focus on the issues of the particular group of kids.

I have done the monasory shcool thing and that is pretty awesome, kind of overwhelming the first day that I did it, but awesome none the less. Today however was combat boots and camies for those who missed leadership day yesterday and blueshirts and khakis for highschool and green shirts for junior high, yeah, this school could be called the last chance saloon, very intense day, I had fun, and I will be there Wed and Fri, must work real job Thurs.... er now where did I leave that bourbon;)
