Tattoo question-- a little gross

Recommended Posts

Ok, so the blue part of my tattoo is starting to look a little rancid. It's bleeding pretty much all over, and it has little white spots on it. My last tattoo was on my back, so I couldn't look at it this closely at all. Should I be concerned? The black part looks completely fine. Thanks in advance!

Just keep the tat covered with a thin layer of neosporin or anything like that and try to keep it as dry as possible and you should be fine. The one on my chest scabbed up like you are describing and it turned out fine......just remember not to scratch it when it starts to itch...you don't want to pull the ink out if a scab gets accidentally pulled off.

if you can't go back to the shop, take a photo and email it to a couple of tattoo shops in your area. they should be able to help.

personally, I'd stop by a different tattoo shop first and get an opinion and see if the first one concurrs...

sounds to me like he was a little heavy with the needle and maybe went too deep.

Shouldn't be concerned. You should wash it with warm water and soap twice a day and apply fragrance free hand lotion as many times as needed. Always keep it moist.

I called a good friend of mine who owns 12 shops around the state of Florida. These are the intstructions he requires all his artists to hand out to all those who get new tattoos.

Your tatt is obviously new; correct? I have two & have always been told for the first few weeks to keep it as moist as possible, (during the flaky/scaby stage) don't let it dry out or it will start to itch. I've never ever been told to put neosporin on it, call your tatt place & ask them.......good luck!

Oh...Lubriderm is what I used on both my tatts!

Whatever you do don't badage it! It needs air to heal. The best thing to do is just keep applying antiseptic cream like Savlon to it to stop the scab drying out and cracking and leaving marks on the finished job. I've had many tattoos and all of them have healed differently. The ones on my wrists took much longer than all the other ones for some reason.

use bacitracin ointment on it. it will protect the color and it fights infection better than other products. use it for a week, then let the tatoo heal by itself. (my buddy the tatooist recomends this) and it has worked for me. if you think it's infected, than by all means get it looked at.

Thanks for all of the advice! I'm going to ride it out a couple of days, keeping it moist, and go from there. If it turns out looking really nasty, I'll post a picture! :P:D

The major consensus from this thread and the PM's, though, is that it'll be fine if I just keep it moist and don't scratch it. If I have to get it recolored, then that's the way it goes. It's all good. But thank you for all the responses! B|

There's a pic in 2 different threads-- one called "New Tattoo", and one called "Let me see your tattoos". It's pretty simple. But it looks better in person (well, maybe not right now, yuck!)-- I'll show it to you if I see you this weekend!

I have a few tattoos, and I have gone full spectrum in after care. Everything from blowing it off and getting it dirty and terribly infected. To treating it like a premature baby, keeping the tattoo in a hyperbaric bubble. I definitley think that the ointment Betadine-H(antibiotic) is the bomb ya rub it on there every few hours to keep it moist at first, to eventually(10days)twice a day. Neosporine can pull ink out of the tattoo and lotion only keeps the skin moist it does not promote healing. Some may have had good results with other products, but you may have either sensitive skin or already have started a little infection. Just my two cents
good luck

Geez. This is starting to sound like a familiar conversation. It goes somethihg like this:

Newbie: How do you pack?

Person question was directed to: Opens mouth...

Everyone else on the dropzone: Do It -THIS- Way!!

I'd probably put some neosporine on it and bandage it up.

My girlfriend has several large tattoos (one currently in progress) and her tattooist (nationally known) says that you shouldn't put neosporin on a fresh tattoo, while it's healing. It sucks ink out of the skin. Bacsitrasin(sp?) however does not do this and is the best thing to use. Plus it usually has a topical pain killer in it too.

Ok, I've switched from Neosporin to Bacitracin, so that should be better. However, it still looks gross, and I think it's because (ew!) it's sticking to my clothes. So I'm sitting at work with one foot bare trying to keep everything off of it. (Hopefully no one will notice). I'm hesitant to switch to lotion as long as the tattoo seems to be bleeding still. I don't want it to get infected.

ASK YOUR TATTOO ARTIST, NOT US!!! Get on the phone with them and get into see them if you are that concerned. They are the only ones who will be able to access the situation professionally. Ointment will fix it enough in the mean time. Your body may be rejecting the ink a little.

DO NOT BANDAGE IT UP BUT DO PUT NEOSPORIN ON IT!!!!!!

You know, I just read my post, and it sounded a little more concerned than I actually am or meant to convey. I was just giving a little bit of follow up, since people continue to post advice. But if I truly become WORRIED, I will call the place that did it. Thanks!
