normal running shoes will NOT be okay

blahhhhhh... maybe for a purist or if you wanna get all serious about it, but I used running shoes all the time when I was younger. They are not ideal, but unless I'm now told by the gods and goddesses of climbing different, I'd say dont waste $100 on climbing shoes unless you want to use them on a regular basis.

Gold's Gym is about 15 minutes from the dz, and they have a nice rock wall in there(It's great for bouldering, top roping, has nice chimneys, overhangs and a small cave. Maybe we can talk them into renting us shoes/equipment for the day.

I'm definatly down for doing some climbing! I can bring my rack down to set up some TR's. We could allways find a 5.8 /5.9 that's next to a 5.10 / 5.11 and set them both up =o) I'll have a second rope again by then. (I just retired my lead rope)

Woo hoo Climbing and Jumping, only thing better would be skiing , climbing, and jumping!

See ya there! ;)

It's been a few years since I've rented, but you should be able to rent shoes for $20 (maybe less) for an entire day. So I'm not telling anyone to run out and buy a pair. Normal running shoes can be used on the lower difficulty feature and/or crack climbs, but not on friction climbing.

Running shoes don't work well for face climbing, you can get away with them in cracks.

Personally I find that some good stiff soled boots work better than tennis shoes for face climbing and large cracks. They edge much better that your typical shoe. (Though they don't work as well in 1-2 inch cracks as tennis shoes do)

Of course there is nothing like a good tight climbing shoe.

As long as your belayer doesn't fall alseep, top roping is a pretty safe form of rock climbing.

Actually it would be really fun to try some rapping (rappeling) if the planets align. But you do need to know how to safely rap, so it's not recommeded for 1st timers (unless we've got two ropes and set up a firemen's belay which once again I seemed to forget the details of how to set it up).

Skymama,

Dressing is simple, wear a pair of pants that are comfortable enough to bring your knee to your chest, Sports bra, and layer shirts, something like a t-shirt and a sweatshirt.

Newbies,
PM me if you need a harness and/or shoes.

Experienced,
PM me if you are bringing anything extra, such as extra harnesses, shoes, ropes, whatever.

I'm hoping at most we will have to rent a few pairs of shoes.

I have a 150-foot Blue Water Static rtope I'll bring for rappeling. I'll set it up and teach rappeling if anyone is interested.

Derek

Now that interests the shit outta me!

I've never thought that I had the strength or stamina for climbing, and possibly not the needed dexterity either, but rappeling.....that's something I'd love to try!

crash pads would probably be good to bring.

Now Bill, can you think of anyone who will have enough room to bring those?
Most times when I'm outside doing some bouldering, I just get a group of my friends to stand under me with their arms raised. Yes, I have friends. If I'm not comfortable with the climb then I make sure I have a harness on with a safety rope.

Kelli -

1) where are you planning on going?

2) crash pads would probably be good to bring. I don't have any of those.

1) Queen Creek Canyon But I'm waiting to hear from a local who might know if there is something closer (it's about 30min-1hr away). I do know there are several walls there, and a good mix of route grades.

2) I don't have one either, so all I can offer is top roping, if someone wants to boulder they will have to do it at thier own risk, someone else may have one though and be able to bring it.

Sounds like there might be some good routes at the magma gardens area.

As your getting beta do you think you could find out if there are any good V4- V6 problems near where we may be doing TR?

I have 3 extra harnesses I can bring as well as some mens size 9 shoes I could lend out.

Well the annual phoenix bouldering competition is in the area, so I'm sure we can find something. I'll be sure to grab bouldering info for the area when we get the sport climbing info. B|

V4-V6....my hero....I'm lucky if I can do a V0:S

Stupid mapquest didn't make it look that far (objects in mirror are closer than they appear). Well it's almost 2 months away, plenty of time to figure things out exactly. I just picked that one cause it didn't seem that far, and it held lots of options. Nothing is written in stone, and I'm flexible.:)

I'd be all over that too! Of course, I should probably learn what to do sometime before actually dropping out of the balloon...:)
