Rock Climbing @ The Holiday Boogie

Recommended Posts

Most times when I'm outside doing some bouldering, I just get a group of my friends to stand under me with their arms raised. Yes, I have friends.

oh my gosh, don't get me started with how many friends she has! There are not enough Margarita's or enough band width in the world to accomodate THAT crowd.

$12 for your 1st shoe rental, the other half of you paycheck for the rest of your life

Sooo not true. One of the reasons I do more rock climbing than skydiving anymore is because it's so much less expensive. Once you get the gear, you aren't paying $20 a pop to climb.

Just go to Camp 4 in Yosemite if you don't believe me...those people know how to live cheap.

I was just teasing her. Although if you are a gear whore it can get quite pricey, heck I've lost so much weight since I started doing it I had to get a new harness, cuase mine doesn't really fit anymore.

You can get your basic gym gear for under $200 if you look for sales. The other toys of course cost more, plus the gym membership if you aren't able to go outside much.

I've spent about $1000 this year on gear and 2 6 month gym memberships (which only took 1 month of going to be worth the price).

Actually it would be really fun to try some rapping (rappeling) if the planets align. But you do need to know how to safely rap, so it's not recommeded for 1st timers (unless we've got two ropes and set up a firemen's belay which once again I seemed to forget the details of how to set it up).

I dissagree. It does take a little training (which works into a belay class well) but first timers can safely do it with a single rope. I usually make sure they have some gloves and do a military belay at the bottom side. (ie. you pull the rope to add the required friction via their belay device. )

(edit) stoopit me.......i was thinkin VI 4 - VI 6

v4 to v6 is 12a to 12d, not 13d...... been out of the loop way too long.......still plenty hard crankin tho....

I'm not saying that I climb 12's, (at least not anymore, I'm out of shape) but I really like working very hard problems. The process of learning to climb something like that is the fun part. For example I once spent a month working white lighning in Yosemite. I was barely leading 5.10 at the time. Nothing like finishing something that took that much effort.

second photo is in hueco tanks near el paso.......pic is saved as 45 degree wall, although i think its the wrong wall and this is a different area.

next is on mount lemmon in az, the hunchback arete, climb is up the overhanging outside edge, i think its 11a, only one way up and one way down........back the way ya came, lower off the cold shuts at the top of the climb.

last pic is for jt........burros on the side of the road near redrock canyon.......this one actually came halfway into the rv, i had to push him out with the other 15 outside.....these guys still wandering around or have all the people infested the area and whined to have them removed by the blm?????

Kelli, I just returned from Florida and I am sooo amped about this climbing trip. Like I said before, I haven't really climbed in about 5 years or so. I miss climbing so much. I wasn't going to go to Eloy until the 31st, but now I am going to try to change my plans so that I can make this rockclimbing trip.

Also, my BF (whom hasn't climbed for years due to a really bad non-climbing knee injury) may also come with me to this climbing trip if he can get out of work duties and flee to Arizona. He has offered to instruct the newbie climbers as he has instructed many others in this sport. He used to climb 5.12s. (It's funny, my BF and I are former climbers, but we have only climbed together twice! LOL!) I got into climbing by myself, so I have had to teach a BF to climb. I am certainly NO expert, but I will also help anyone that needs instruction.

Skypup ~ I am not in shape anymore, but I would love to climb some 5.10s (and if I push it...maybe more) I climbed about 3 months ago after not having climbed for many years. Please bring all gear, so you, I and the others (whom used to climb or currently climb) can try out the slightly more challenging routes. Maybe we should stick to sporting routes for this trip, though.

JT ~ PM me your # as my BF and I may be able to meet with you soon (Redrocks)! :P

Mouth ~ You have the perfect body for climbing...small, strong and nimble! ;) Trust me, even if you just come along to "watch", you will end up climbing a few routes! My prediction is that you could be a VERY good "natural" climber.

Skymama ~ For your first time, wear something comfortable that breathes (hiking pants, tops, sports bras/tops, t-shirts, etc.) and be sure that you can really move all your limbs in any direction *(non-restrictive). NO GLOVES...yuck! You want to feel the rock... it may hurt, slash/cut or give you horrible blisters, though. (Please cut nails short.) Also, think layers! Call me if you have questions. I loooove that you are going!!!

Everyone ~ Climbers are pretty laid back people. Like skydivers, they welcome newbies, and encourage people to try the sport. You'll love it!

Rosa we will be bringing 2 dynamic ropes and a static rope. Plus I have enough gear to choke a small horse, so we will be good to go on 2 routes, heck we could even set one up for just lead climbing to keep it challenging. Plus video of a few wippers is always good. :)

Steve, if I make it I'm planning on bring my extra rope, webbing, etc. Don't have a lead rack since I suck at lead. I also have an extra harness and shoes. I would suggest bring the rack just so we can laugh at eachother trying to do leads.

Are you heading out to Brush Saturday?

I'll bring some webbing and anything else needed for making anchors (as well as my rack). But it sounds like my rope isn't needed.

Yes, as long as Mother Nature is nice to us, I'll be jumping in Brush this weekend. :P

I would love to come climbing with everyone if there is room? I have a ton of gear, but only a few ropes (I threw lot away as they were trashed from El Cap ascents). I also have some extra shoes and harnesses. I live in Tempe and will be climbing in Queen Creek this weekend. Maybe I will scout out a good area for everyone?

Don't mean to sound ignorant, but is this Rock Climbing going to be on a fairly large mountain?
I prefer the high mountains with lots of versatile ridges. ;) :P

If you want to do a multi-pitch or 2, I'm sure it can be arranged. Personally I'm not planning on doing anything like that, but there will be several very experienced climbers who may be interested in it. You may need to work with them though to make sure you have all the required gear.

Cool, Ronnie is coming, too! Oh yeah, I'll climb wherever you and Haley climb on the DZ.com Holiday trip. You know how little I climb nowadays (Can you say "nonexistant"?), so I trust that you will have some nice kickbutt routes picked out to thoroughly fatigue...hehehe! (My upper body strength is pretty pathetic right about now.) Since you are the pro having climbed hardcore for so many years, Ronnie, I think that I'll be sticking with you as my belayer! :P

Ok an update for everyone.

Climbing is scheduled for Dec. 29th which is on a Monday, in Queens Creek Canyon.

18 people have manifested.

We have plenty of spare harnesses coming and I'm working on finding a place to rent shoes in Eloy.

aw nuts..I can't go, that's my sister's birthday! I can't miss it again this year. Last year it was because of the jumps that Craig was organizing..I forgot to go home...she wasn't too happy.
