ripper0289 0 #1 December 4, 2003 OK, so the winter months are here, and I have a question. Barring any trips to more pleasant climates, it will be a long time before I can get in the air again. Are there any good DVD's or (yuk) VHS tapes that would be good for some on the ground learning? I am most interested in landings and canopy control. Any input would be appreciated. AggieDave 6 #2 December 4, 2003 Most importantly: Talk to your instructors, see if they recommend anything! Always review outside information you recieve with your instructors! You can watch and try to learn, but unfotunately with this sport, its really about getting the actual experience and muscle memory down. There's an older video called "Fly like a pro" but it is quite a few years old (and I haven't seen it), so I'm not sure how relevant the information is on our now newer designs of canopies. You could always watch Swoop, Swoop2 or Out of the Blue, but you won't learn anything, they are really fun to watch, though.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." weegegirl 2 #4 December 4, 2003 Breakaway should be a requirement for everyone... students and experienced... to watch once a year. It shows all the malfunctions and how to handle them. Also, Pack Like a Pro and Fly Like a Pro are a little out of date, but great instructional flicks.
NoShitThereIWas 0 #5 December 4, 2003 Probably your best learning tool is to look at videos of yourself and watch them in slow motion too if you are doing anything "fancy". I used to critique my own flying skills to the hilt. Also watch video of really experienced belly fliers in the wind tunnel or on skydives and just look at their body positions to try and figure out how thy are doing their moves. Ooops sorry you were interested in Canopy Control ... there are some good books out there, try getting a copy of Basic Canopy Flight by Skydive University. Don't know any real good videos ... unless there's something out there on CReW Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say." riddler 0 #6 December 4, 2003 QuoteI am most interested in landings and canopy control. Ya know - I think this definitely exposes a void in the wave of skydiving videos. Even the safety ones don't seem to focus on this crucial aspect of our sport. I believe that canopy control and landings are the most likely place for new students to get hurt, but I don't think I've seen a video that just covers this topic. Anyone want to make one? Oh, and Ripper - keep asking questions. It's good for you!Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
fool 0 #7 December 4, 2003 I agree with you 100%, I think there should be more canopy control videos out there, especially on some of the more aggresive techniques, BUT, although old, fly like a pro does cover the basic ideas of canopy flight, and is still a really good tool to have at your disposal, even if it presents one situation you hadn't thought of in the past, it's worth it. Same with breakaway, everyone should see this AT LEAST once. Sebazz1 2 #8 December 4, 2003 There is one movie comes to my mind that may help you. This movie has scenes which are second to none with regards to skydiving instruction. From first jump refresher training, exit, freefall and especially canopy control. Fandango... Get it for sure. This movie has elevated my skydiving to new heights i could only have dreamed of in the past. Fandango <---- In case you didn't see it mentioned above.
