VanillaSkyGirl 6 #1 December 3, 2003 About two weeks ago, I rented "The Believer". I highly recommend it. "The Believer" is by writer/director Henry Bean with Ryan Gosling in the lead role. It was shot in a "gritty" way to give it the bare bones look of a documentary, not a slick, "Hollywood movie". This film was indeed inspired by the true story of a young man who was a skinhead and chose to kill himself after a reporter "outed" his Jewish past. It's an exploration into the mind of that person, now filmed as a fictional angry young neo-Nazi. Although this film won the Grand Jury prize at Sundance (2202), it could not find a distributor because it was criticized for possibly finding an audience among hate groups. In my opinion, the film in no way condones religious intolerance. It is obvious that this character is a confused, violent Jew who somehow has turned his self-hate into an ugly, misunderstood road to intolerance and hate by becoming a neo-Nazi. Ryan Gosling, the lead, blew me away with his performance throughout the film. He was emotionally able to display the inner turmoil over the truth (that he is, in fact, a Jew), and his outward reality of being a key neo-fascist figure in an underground movement. He portrayed this emotional , conflicting struggle, at times, without any words or other actors to interact with. He is definitely a hot, young actor to watch for in upcoming projects. Ryan's obvious intelligence that comes through in his acting, along with his grasp of acting and film making, in general, is impressive. This film is definitely not for everyone as some people may feel that it is offensive, even though it ultimately seemed to show the pull of religious faith as overcoming "hate". Personally, I have no problem exploring something like religious intolerance intelligently as this film made me think more about my Catholic upbringing (in a good way). I questioned my own step away from "organized" religion to being spiritual/moral, as I have questioned myself several times before, having been such a religious/pious child and young woman. So...if you want to see a great lead actor and an interesting, yet disturbing, examination into religious intolerance, then rent this video. Just be forwarned that it is ugly to be inside the head of this truly disturbed young man. Does anyone else have any movies that they would like to recommend? You don't have to give a detailed review. Thumbs up or down is OK.
 weegegirl 2 #2 December 3, 2003 and I recommend... I just have an odd obsession w/ this genra & specific type of movie. My non-practicing Jewis room mate took quite some offense to it. He didn't stick around to see the end of the movie, which justifies whatching the rest of it. The lead actor truely was amazing in his portrale of a man torn between 2 feelings. Last night, I just watched Amen, the true story of an SS officer that tried to tell the catholic church/pope about what was going on @ the "labor camps" & how the church ignored him... quite interesting; but also rather dry. Good imagery also. There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear. Only you can fix your fear. PMS #227 (just like the TV show)
 TribalTalon 0 #6 December 3, 2003 i watched "The Body" a few days ago on HBO.. found it extremely interesting.. its about a fictional archaelogical find where they find the body of Jesus Christ in Joseph's tomb in Jerusalem, and the Catholic church sends a priest, (antonio banderas) to investigate. I thought it was a good movie, makes you think about what people would think if the body of Christ was actually found. that would mean that there was no Resurrection, and no second coming, and that Christ was really just a religious carpenter. *shrugs* i think most people would find it boring, but if you're into religious stuff like i am, its cool. (side note, i'm not religious, i'm just interested in the historical and psychological impact of religion. :D)
 melstarr 0 #7 December 3, 2003 The Secretary - directed by Steven Shainberg A very different/exotic-sort-of-love story...
