skybytch 273 #1 December 1, 2003 I opened the store fifteen minutes early today. I must've known that at 9 am exactly the power would go out all over the dropzone. Can someone explain to me why UPS' (uninteruptable power supplies) have to make those obnoxious noises when the power is out? They're driving me up the wall... and not slowly. Can I shut them off without hurting anything? Got all the puters ('cept the lappie of course) shut down already. If the power isn't back on before the lappie battery dies I'm off to get my Xmas shopping done.
bsoder 0 #2 December 1, 2003 Think of a UPS as the teenager of the battery world. They whine like crazy when forced to do any actual work. As long as there's nothing hooked up to them that needs power, you can shut them off. You need to turn them back on when the power comes back on, obviously. skybytch 273 #3 December 1, 2003 Dang. Walked down to manifest and they said they heard it was out all over town, would be 3-4 hours before it comes back. Walked back to the store, put up a "closed til the power comes back" sign and was debating whether to drive to town to see if the bank had power or not when - like magic! - the power came back on. As I was walking back from manifest I was kinda looking forward to a morning off. Dammit.
skybytch 273 #4 December 1, 2003 Okay, I give up. Was wondering why the phone hasn't rung all day... it hasn't been ringing cuz there's no freakin' dial tone! And yes, I did pay the bill Phones are out all across the dz... the phone company must be swamped with angry customer calls cuz I can't even get their toll free number to ring. Discovered this after my lappie crashed twice (wtf? I thought XP never crashed!). Makes it kinda hard to run a business without electricity and a phone line.... I'd close and go do my Xmas shopping but after all the snafus today I'm afraid the road will roll up in front of me.
