Were I right to turn down this order?

Recommended Posts

My boss saw one my closing pin necklace that I make and asked me if I could deliver 60 of them for gifts to emploees at my company at a happening.
I turned it down, because I think people wearing them should have some connection to the sport.

I could have earned about $1000 on the deal.
Currently the makeing of these necklaces is just a hobby.

What do you think?

There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

No you did the right thing.
We are the Elite, and should have status symbols to show this;)
The closing pin is a status symbol, and a code key to other skydivers.

You did the right thing.

I've done HUGE favours for skydivers - from everywhere - simply cos I saw the pin. I'd never do that for a whuffo. Never.

I was drunk and homeless in Germany somewhere in 1986 - and some dude said "You a skydiver?" I said "Yeah, why?" and he offered me a place to stay for a few nights. We never jumped together till the early 90's when he came on holiday to SA and I got a chance to return the favour.

Gut feeling says no, don't do it.
But, alas ticket money is ticket money.

I guess, thats the key to the matter, wearing one does not make you a skydiver, so you ask.

Hey Tonto, if you are homeless and drunk in Germany again, give me call!

I would be kickin myself in the ass because $1000 would go along way this close to Christmas..

But you did the right thing, our sport is our sport. It's not like any other sport where people wear our stuff as a fashion statement. Our skydiver jewelry is special to us. None of the whuffos who got a necklace would even know what the closing pin was for, or what it meant :D

:D A friend and I tell whuffo's that ask that it's the symbol of the hand maiden of the water goddess. Unless they're really stuck up. Then we tell them its the symbol of the fluffer of the hand maiden of the water goddess!:D

Totally did the right thing. I have been trying to find a closing pin necklace I really like as a gift for my girlfriend (and one for me too), and if I saw non-skydivers wearing them, it would completely eliminate the meaning and special connection a gift like that would have for us.

Am I worthy to wear a closing pin necklace after only 2 jumps.............

DUDE, you're a skydiver, YES? (psssst! The answer here is "yes")

Wear away, my friend. B|

Edited to add: I'm a baby in this sport too, regardless of the number of jumps I have (really low).

seems like the general consensus is:

do you jump?
are you planning to continue to jump?
are you somehow otherwise involved in skydiving (packer, manifest, pilot, etc?)
did you used to jump but still love the sport?

if the answer to any of these is yes, most would say go for it.

I've heard some say "have to be licensed" or "have to have 200 jumps" but those seem to be in the minority. I've even heard of DZs giving necklaces to their AFF grads.

Allow me to be the voice of dissent.
Ever buy a hat or t-shirt of your favorite sports team? Did they tell you you can't buy it unless you play for the team? No. When I ordered a tie with a skydiver on it from paragear did they ask for any information other than my credit card number? No. Your sense of loyalty is touching, but your sense of business is lacking.

Shouldn't he ask someone with more jumps that can properly educate him on the cultural nuances of the skydiving community?

I suppose that makes sense. I was merely passing on the knowledge that has been given to me by those with kind hearts and high jump numbers. B|

Dude, your sig is hilarious! I love it!

However, I disagree with you. A non-jumper who never plans on jumping, thinks it's crazy, and has no appreciation for what we do (i.e. whuffos) wearing a closing pin nacklace is like getting a meaningful, symbolic tattoo just 'cause it looks cool even though they haven't a clue what it represents.

T-shirts are one thing - they show fandom and appreciation. A dad wearing a tie 'cause his little girl skydives and he's proud is another thing. A closing pin necklace for someone who's never been to a DZ- no way!

I like the idea of using a different symbol, like a sun or star or something - solves the problem!

you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?
