Tonto 1 #26 November 26, 2003 QuoteQuoteA 3-yr-old made a tandem jump this year at my DZ, his dad has thousands of tandem jumps and was insistant that the kid be the youngest ever. Hmm.. that was probably not the youngest kid ever.. Herman Landsman (owner of Paracentrum Texel in the Netherlands) jumped with his 2.5 year old daughter some time ago. Earlier this year he jumped with his 3.5 year old son. Iwan Quite correct. I witnessed the exit with the 3 year old, as his dad jumps at the same DZ I do, and while he was scared in the door, he was no more scared than some other tandem paxes I've seen. I was going to take my daughter when she was 7, but put it off until she was 8. She loved it, and has jumped again since then. tIt's the year of the Pig. JRock 0 #27 November 26, 2003 I disagree.... Not being an ass here.... but people that young DO NOT.... reiterate DO NOT understand the concept of what the price tag is if they screw up. When you are young.... you don't think you are going to die...... ever. There inlies the immaturity. I don't care how mature a kid acts or appears... I believe that the understanding of danger takes a few more years to sink in..... Just my opinion. Let me just say I am not dogging these young skydivers! I am just saying at that age..... one does not having the concept of the consequences.

I was at WTS when Zach had his first mal, a hard pull, one-two-three and when to his reserve. and I belive that hes had another mal since then. I made a jump w/ him very early on in his caree, and then at rantoul (hes now better than be, and been jumping about half the time, and probably has cought me in jump numbers. they are all great people, Mike and Andrea both have helped me when I needed it. i would jump w/ any of their boys, anyday, and expect them to be waiting on me. and actually Mathew is the youngest, w/ I belive 2 tandems now.Goddam dirty hippies piss me off! ~GFD "What do I get for closing your rig?" ~ me "Anything you want." ~ female skydiver Mohoso Rodriguez #
Newbie 0 #29 November 26, 2003 QuoteA 3-yr-old made a tandem jump this year at my DZ, his dad has thousands of tandem jumps and was insistant that the kid be the youngest ever am i the only one that thinks this is so not cool?? That's some Jessica Dubroff syndrome right there. If the poor kid was screaming in the door, he shouldn't be up there - sure other paxes do that, but most of those are 18+ and are aware of what is going on, and what the consequences are. As the other guys said, when a kid still talks to imaginery people, how on earth can they be in a mature enough frame of mind to make a jump and not think they can fly out of their bedroom window?? RoysPlayThing 0 #31 November 26, 2003 Hmm... I didn't know you could skydive that young. My daughter said that she could if she wanted to and got her parents permission, but I told her that I thought you had to be 18.. I was wrong!! _______________________________________________ My mind is like a parachute...it functions only when open.
nightjumps 1 #32 November 26, 2003 I'm with you on this one, Mike. While there are anamolies, there's also huge legal issues with those under 18 entering into a contract (waiver) in virtually every state. And if anyone under 18 ever goes in, we're going to see state, federal & local authorities and the press climbing so far up the parents/DZO's ass, that we'll all be taking laxatives for a year to get 'em out. And then it will happen. The FAA will step in and figure out a way to regulate it.

lawrocket 3 #40 November 26, 2003 QuoteI teach 14 -16 yo delinquent boys and most of these guys are extremely competant with Risky sports, skydiving, to some of these kids would be no big issue. Um, I would think these are the last people one would want to be skydiving! They are delinquent boys. Would that not tend to show a lack of making proper life decisions? Sure, they may be good at rugby, but there is a difference. I would tend to think that if they can't stay outta trouble then the LAST place they should be is under canopy. marks 0 #41 November 26, 2003 i would take a kid in there teens.... 13 plus... on a tandam if they wanted too and there parents said it was ok... as long as i could find a drop zone to let them jump..... im not really too worried about being sued.. because i wouldnt think that i would hurt them in any way... if i did for some reason and did get sued... well whoever sues me is welcome to my debts.... i wish i was able to jump at that age/.... I was on top of the world, and even though I knew what dying was, I figured that I was just too tough, too cool, I was unstoppable. And, furthermore, I didn't care if I died, life sucked anyhow, I wasn't allowed to stay out past midnight! As a general guideline, I wouldn't let a kid under 16 jump... you can make the judgement to sign off or not then, but I think younger than that is too young. jmo, of course. I would absolutely not let my child jump at 11 years old, especially on his/her own. Tandems are another argument/topic alltogether. Angela.
Squeak 17 #44 November 27, 2003 I would put it on a case by case basis. although, I'd draw that line at about 14, mostly beacuase that's the bottom age group I deal with so I have limited experience with younger. I work with some kids who at 15 would have no problems with skydiving, the sense of fearlessness is not necassairly a bad thing. I also work with adults I would not trust with a wind up toy, let alone something that could kill them. The kids I deal with put their lives on the line almost daily, what with BMX jumps, motocross bikes, down hill and vert skating, and just everyday stupidity. Now granted it's not from 14000 feet, but you don't need much altitude to kill yourself on a motocross jump or slamm yourself face first into the concrete off a vert ramp. You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! How's yours doing?
jumpinfarmer 0 #45 November 27, 2003 I agree. I was driving tractors when I was about 10 and was in a truck when I was about 13 not on a main road but still driving. At 15 I thought I was king shit when I was combining wheat. I knew the consequense of f%&*ing up not only could I get hurt or killed but I had to ansuer to Dad and Grandpa that put the fear of death into me. I have a cousin who rides snowmobile with us all the time, he's 12 now and has been riding for 4 years. Not just around the farm but 80 to 100 mile trips on state trails. I trust him over many of the adults I ride with. He also can run a backhoe better than most contractors I know. I do think 3 or 4 is to young even for a tandem, I don't think they can realy understand whats going on. However if a 14 year old can comprehend the ground school and has been around the sport all there life go for it. One of my instructors said he was jumping at 16 and jumped into his high school I thought that was cool. I regret not having started earlier in my life, I'm 29 I could have been jumping for years. I'm starting to rant so I'll stop here.
Jasmin 0 #46 November 27, 2003 Going out of a c-130 hercules for a first jump would have been fine...but I probably wouldn't have appreciated how cool that is at the time!! As for first jump on our 14th b'day...we thought it was pretty cool too!!xj "I wouldn't recommend picking a fight with the earth...but then I wouldn't recommend picking a fight with a car either, and that's having tried both."
