Gawain 0 #53 November 20, 2003 First, for Shark: Deeply Pro-American (of course). Next, for AdD: QuoteYou are kidding yourself if you think you have complete freedom to criticize the US government. Sure they may not haul you into the rose garden and execute you, but try to publish in a major journal and see how far you get. Noam Chomsky, a professor of linguistics at MIT and one of the sharpest political analysts I've come across, is a great example of this. The guy has some excellent points, firmly based on rationality and objectivity, but he is widely ignored. There is no need for government censorship when the media censures itself and ignores its journalistic obligations. Pick up any newspaper, any US hosted web-site, and you'll find plenty of publications that openly criticize the US Govt. This level of freedom of press does not exist in Canada, the UK, France or Germany. I understand your perception, but just because someone doesn't pay attention, doesn't mean another is being censored. Censorship is forced suppression of ideas. Chomsky was ignored a lot of mainstream media, but that did not stop dozens of interviews, or a debate with ex-CIA Director James Woolsey which was covered by PBS. He wasn't suppressed, or marched off into the darkness by the police. I would argue that his political acumen, while quite impressive, is hardly objective. The Detroit Metro Times had an interview of his from 1991. The guy is creepy in my opinion, and while I won't discount what he says, I do discount how he tries to tie timelines and policy implementation. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! The world is slightly more complex then that. 2) Patriotism is good - but only up to a limit - blind patriotism is just that. It makes you blind towards other cultures and ideas. (and will loose you friends….) 3) Just because you disagree with certain policies of the current government does not make you anti-American. Governments come and go – the basic values and culture do not really change just because government change. Branding people "anit-American" because of politics is a deeply anti-democratic approach. 4) I have lived in 5 countries on opposite sides of the world and visited at least 30 on all continents. The one thing I learned is that every country and every population has something to offer. Even the poorest place – because it is often there you meet the nicest people. I also learned that no country is perfect. Which place you like best depends of what you are looking for. It is very normal that most people will designate their own country as “the best” - home is always best . I have lived less then 1/3 of my live in my country of origin; and I still get goose bumps when I hear the National anthem even after many years away. Nothing wrong with that - as long you do not dis-respect others and become narrow minded.--------------------------------------------------------- When people look like ants - pull.
