Fireworks factory blows up (video)

Recommended Posts

For those that don't speak Dutch. The commentator in the end axplain that as the video plays a segment in slow motion, you can see how powerful the last explosion really was. that you can see the roofs actually being lifted off the buildings.

:S

If it is the factory explosion I think of, it is pretty damn sad. the factory was in the middle of a residential neighbourhood.

This happened 2 years ago or something, this factory was based in an actual neighbourhood, which was pretty much wiped off the planet.. They are just starting to build houses there again now. This was one of the most horrible accidents... I saw stills of the neighbourhood afterwards, and it looked like a war zone.

My grandparents live in that city so it scared the £$%$ out of me when this happened. Lucky enough they live far away enough from that area that they didn't get hurt or loose their house.

So, how come the camera person was on the roof and just happened to be watching the factory when this happened?

It started as a pretty small fire that the people at the factory tried to put out themselves.
When they called the firedept, they didn't send over enough capacity at first or something. Nobody really knows what exactly happened, everybody is pointing at someone else in this case. Basically there was something like 300% more fireworks stored there than the firedept. thought there was....

So I guess since there was smoke and some fireworks, the camera guy just decided to film it.

>>The guy shooting video was pretty ballsy for being there. <<

I am sure he had no idea how ballsy at the time - notice that at the beginning he is filming a bunch of fireworks at what might be considered a safe distance. There is quite a bit of camera shake by the end.

I think this was the Enschede fire, if so...

"On 13 May 2000, a devastating explosion at a fireworks depot ripped through a residential district in the eastern Dutch town, leaving 22 people dead and 2,000 families homeless. Total material damage has been estimated at half a billion US dollars."
A guy later got 15 years for the arson, if I recall correctly.

That's why UK law is very strict on fireworks manufacturers here.. you can't set up a business in a residential area for them, and there are stringent limits on the number of fireworks stored etc.

But wow, big bang that one. Shame so many people died (if you're right about which incident it is).
