The Da Vinci Code

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else read this book?
I thought it was a great book because it's got me thinking about Biblical history in a new light. It has questioned some of the basic fundamental of Christian doctrine and history using verifiable facts and drawing some interesting conclusions. If it's fiction, it's a pretty good read, if not, a very contraversial book to say the least. The reason I'm not giving specifics, is because I don't want to ruin it for everyone, lest I am dragged off and beaten.

This is paraphrased from the teaser in the book.
The curator of the Louvre has benn murdered, and he left a puzzle for a symbologist and a cryptographer to solve.

It involves hidden clues in the works of Da Vinci, and involves a secret society known as the Priory of Scion, that has had several famous members. (Newton, Hugo, Da Vinci etc).

They have to find a secret that would rewrite history and the the Vacitan is trying to keep hidden.

Yes, and I enjoyed it a lot. Take a look at "The Last Supper" and it surely looks like a woman next to Jesus.

I read it as well. I was raised in a firly strong christian environment. But my parents often encouraged me to have an open mind about things. It was interesting reading this book in public because people would ask me what it was about and then when I told them they would tell me that it was blasphemy and shouldn't be reading it. Yes. Complete Strangers.

I am curious as to how much of it is fiction and how much is based off of history. I have been planning to do some research into it using the book as an avenue to compare and contrast.

good book I recommend it.

Someone was telling me there are even rumblings of a movie but I haven't checked.

I LOVED this book!! I could NOT put it down when I picked it up. I ended up reading it in 3 sittings because I just couldn't stop! This book is defined as "fiction," but it is pretty crazy all the facts you see in there and really does make you think about the world ...

Another REALLY good book I could not put down at all was by the same author, Dan Brown. The book is called Angels & Demons. If you liked the Da Vinci Code, you'll LOVE this one too!! Check it out, you will not be disappointed!

Trailer 11/12 was the best. Thanks for the memories ... you guys rocked!

Painted 1500 years after Christ using either a woman or feminine looking man as a model and that means what? :P

Not too long ago in the History Channel there was documentary about hidden codes inside the bible. Over there they talked about Da Vinci's method and many others to find this hidden code. Someone (don't remember the name) found a methodology to find hidden codes and to be honest it was extremely sharp what they found. There were history events hidden all over it...even the Columbia tragedy. It really got me thinking for sure. The whole purpose of this study was to find the real word of Jesus Christ but they found something else....some kind of "time capsule" of history events in the past or possible future.

Did you believe all of that stuff about the "sacred feminine"?

It is fairly well established that pre-Christian pagan religions worshipped a goddess, so in that sense, I suppose I do. The origin of many "Christian" festivals is pagan. There's a lot of archeological evidence for fertility goddesses, usually very obese, from pre-Christian times.

Do I believe this novel is factual - no, it's just a novel, but with enough background to make it more plausible than, say, Raiders of the Lost Ark.

A lot of what it says about the Roman church is quite true - it did redact the Gospels in the 4th century, and it was taken over by misogynists. Much Roman church dogma dates from the 4th century, not the 1st century.

Fictional, yes. But one must admit that the whole deal with the Priory of Sion, Rennes Les Chateau, The Freemasons and the Knights Templar is pretty interesting reading.

Google it.

And we all know the Freemasons exist, and have been around for a while. As for the others, not really sure.

An interesting Matrix link: Supposedly the "holy grail bloodline of Christ" led to the founding of the Merovingian dynasty in France....tie that back into the "philosophy" of the Matrix movies.

Don't have to. I know Freemasonry intimately, and know first hand what a crock of sh*t it was, in my experience.

The only problem with said "methodology" is that it can be applied to just about anything and a "secret" can be uncovered. Think along the lines of the movie "My Beautiful Mind" where Crow was pulling supposedly secret messages out of magazines. If you throw enough formulas at any text, even what I've written here, you will eventually uncover something that looks like a hidden message. So one has to take the "hidden code" with a grain of salt.

As a pure work of Fiction it is a good book to take on a flight or when you have time to kill. I am sure it will/has pissed off a good deal of Religious people not only in what it suggests but also those concerned with historical accuracies. I wouldn't call it a work of genius on Brown's part but he did remember to tie in enough truths with the fiction to make it seem believable if not credible to some people at first glance. Personaly, I found some of the twists predictable and some of the characters actions laughable( you need an account # at a bank?) but keeping in mind it is fiction and not fact keeps one on keel. I think it's a kin to the Matrix, a fun diversion, entertainment. In fact I believe there is a movie already out that touches on this exact topic. Not sure if it is based off the book or not. The name escapes me but it basically had the whole cast from the rock 'n roll movie "A knights tale"(?) and suggests a secret religious society. Anyone know what the name of the movie is by chance?

I wonder if my impluse shopping will take over and I'll go get it today? Hrm....a distinct possibility.

Guess what happened?

Yeppers. Right about 3ish I found myself at Barnes and Noble, clutching a Starbucks coffee and chatting to the book-looker-upper-guy about the Da Vinci Code and the sacred feminine concept. Tooled around the store, and picked up my copy. I also added Jesus and the Lost Goddess, which may talk about the origins of the scared feminine. Dunno, it sounded good, looked interesting, so I bought it. I've already read The Gnostic Gospels, and am very familiar with the concepts of the Councils of Nicea...so this should be rather interesting.

BTW, I have been looking at the Catholic religion, and maybe it's just me, but I don't really find it too mysogynistic. At least, in it's pure form, and in it's presentation. ;)...

I read it, I thought it was interesting and fairly well researched.

But pure fiction nonetheless.

you mean sort of like the bible?

oh wait that one was written (and edited) by committee.

I was fairly bored with the book actually, its not a bad 'who done it' , but its really pretty derivative of Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose and Foucault's Pendulum

but if it makes anyone question some of their basic religious assumptions its probably a good thing...

Well, sometimes impulse shopping does not yeild the results one would want...

I read the Da Vinci Code, and was bored. What a pity, too, because it seems to be interesting to so many people. For me, there was nothing new, nothing terribly thought provoking, and the story line was contrived. Conceptually, it is interesting...but not in actuality.

I suppose I wanted to see/read more about the history of the Knights Templar, Priory of Sion, Opus Dei, and the Freemasons; perhaps I had higher expectations than what would've been able to deliver in a novel. I've read things, however, which are novel/fiction, which held my attention and created an interest in researching things further, and this book was not it.

The ideas, as in the symbology, are interesting nonetheless. It's just there was a whole "there is no way this could actually happen" with regards to the characters, and that is what I have difficulty with. I found myself not caring whether or not anyone lived to the last page, and if they did, who it was who would survive...it just didn't matter to me.

And the last note is that it read like a fleshed out script, rather than a novel, as if the author had written it with optioning it for a movie in mind rather than telling a story well and seeing what happens.

I was terribly disappointed. I rarely regret spending money for a book; this time, I do have that regret.
