Ever jumped in snow?

Recommended Posts

I did. It's fun for the first two seconds. Then when you can't feel your fingers, nose, ears,... it's not so fun anymore :S

The landings are great though, you can drag a toe over the snow.

But beware depth perception changes quite a bit when everything is white..

one more thing

be careful when you drag a toe over snow. it can have a frozen crust on top. You can break it if you have enough speed, but at the end of the swoop, when you're slow enough, crust is stronger and it stops you in a moment.

You probably can imagine how it looks like if something locks your feet to the ground in the middle of the swoop :D

Well sir, if you take a peek at my profile, you'd see that I'm too young in the sport to think about swooping anyhow!! ;) I'm not a sky Venus yet...just yer basic 'A'...

No, I have my own variety of swooping...it's more like skiing on the wet grass out at the East Field dropzone when it has a lil' dew on it. And the ending to that performance varies; either I end the long skid on my feet and it's a "TA-DA!!" (as per the instructions of my coach), or I tumble, and it's an "I meant to do that!" :D

In Chicagoland winters, we're all very excited when it actually warms up enough to snow.
Let's you know that it's above frigid - so we should be able to actually feel our extremities upon touchdown.

There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear. Only you can fix your fear.

Dito here But I did land in cow*#$*. once. Does that count??

Yep, I just love watching them spread manure on the south end of the dropzone...helps make sure you're on top of your accuracy :D:D

Last week one of the students barely missed the end of the field and landed (softly) in the dirt of the farmer's field on that end. I didn't bring up the fact that I saw them fertilizing it the week prior...he didn't smell too bad so I assumed they hadn't fertilized since! :D

"Warm up enough" so you mean it can actually be too cold for that?? Man overhere we're glad when it's cold enough for the snow to stay for a while. Most of the time it melts away immediately

Rain hurts more than snow....hop n pops are good in either. Just wear gloves, find a few other crazy people like you to fill a load and dry out your canopy after. :)After its snowed eveything looks different - I love it! If the snow is fairly deep it makes landing a bit different, but as long as you have warm gloves and wear layers its a lot of fun.

If it gets really cold, it doesn't snow that often. Usually have to wait for a little warmer of air to blow in with some moisture in it. Last year was pretty cold, and there was almost no snow, same the year before. It just seems to go hand in hand that too cold means that there wont be crap for snow, and then all you have is the stuff on the ground.

I did about 60 winter/snow jumps last year and they're definitely fun, but I've since moved to Florida. I won't be upset if I don't do any snow jumps this year. It's cool seeing people swooping and seeing all the powder get kicked up. :)

I always thought that the clouds were frozen shut & so wouldn't release any snow. Just cause it's dry doesn't mean there's no clouds either.
And the stuff on the gound is only at the most 3 inches thick, frozen solid & multiple colors of grey/black (acid snow sucks)!

I have heard that they do snow jumps @ sky knights... in WI, where it snows more. perhaps I'll make it up there this year.

I haven't jumped while it is snowing (I have jumped in light rain though and it hurts). But I have landed with snow on the ground and it's fun surfing the slippery surface (assuming the snow is not very deep). I can't wait for this winter as I should be able to surf even further than I did last winter. ;)

I went down to Kapowsin this morning.. there were like 10 cars in the ditch on the hill going up to the DZ from Orting. There was 4 to 5" of snow up there.. If it clears.. as it is supposed to... there could be some cool swoopage at Kapow on Sat:)

Ooohh, Jeanne I'm almost jealous! i'm not allowed out a-sky-jumpin' on the weekends, but this weekend I will be in Las Vegas getting the spoiled rotten wife treatment...nails, hair, massage, oh yeah.

-Does Ty let people jump up at SDS when it's snowing or will he close it down ya think?

Why For you Cain't be sky jumpin on weekends...hmmm
nah I think Tyson will let people jump..
As long as the runway is cleared... and not icy for the planes.. no problemo..

But here in Redmond its just raining..

Unless it gets colder again.. It will just be good ole rain here.. Remember Kapow is a few hundred feet higher, and if its clear... its the PLACE to be. The Caravan is just sitting there waiting.. and you KNOW Mt Rainier just got a whole new coat of snow this week.. It will be GLORIOUS at altitude this weekend..at either place.

Is that what they were doing. I couldn't figure out their driving back and forth with the tractor and the thingie so I just ignored it.

BTW, if you can't land inside the East Field at that DZ, you deserve to smell like manure!

I was just at Kapowsin today and they had about 4" of accumulation before I left, and still snowing hard. And our Summer Caravan is there, too! If the snowclouds weren't down to 100 AGL, it would be perfect. :S
