I thought you liberal Californians were "compassionate" and "tolerant". If a conservative were to do what you've done, it would instantly be dubbed "hate speech". Pretty sad, Sue. happythoughts 0 #32 November 16, 2003 Darn it, I go out and do a couple of good skydives and what happens? Someone starts a thread that shows how ignorant Californians are. I seem to miss all the good ones. The thing about California is that they talk about "cultural diversity", but really don't have even one good one. Texans have self-reliance, barbeque, their own style of two-step. A culture that can be defined. I hardly expected to hear from California about intolerance and bigotry. Let's see... Rodney King, South Central riots, Korean grocery store burnings... well, who has time to list them all...

Joining commission officials at a news conference in Oakland, Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown endorsed the report's recommendations and said, "The biggest threat to California is not the budget deficit, but its bankrupt prison and parole system." Brown said the system is "a clear and present danger to our citizens" because parolees come out of prison worse than when they come in since they don't get education or training to help develop skills that would allow them to get jobs and function well in society. "The problem is there's no motivational system to move them from criminality to honest citizenship," Brown said. He added, "It's an insane system that has to be corrected." James Mayer, the commission's executive director, said California releases 125,000 felons from prison every year with little preparation for life on the outside and then winds up returning the vast majority to prison when they commit new offenses. "Few have received the education, job training or drug treatment they need to stand even a chance of success on the outside," Mayer said. The percentage of California parole violators returned to prison nearly tripled between 1980 and 2000. And while nationally 42 percent of parolees successfully complete parole, only 21 percent of California's parolees do not return to prison or do not flee supervision. "Only Utah has a worse rate of parolee success," Mayer said. The Little Hoover Commission is a bipartisan and independent state agency charged with recommending ways to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of state programs. The commission's report was delivered Thursday to Gov. Gray Davis, Gov.-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger and the state Legislature. The report's findings were announced at news conferences in Oakland, Sacramento and Los Angeles. Mayer said California's prison system costs taxpayers $5 billion a year - about 6 percent of the state's general fund. About $1.5 billion of that is spent dealing with felony offenders who have completed their initial prison terms. One of the report's recommendations is that local law enforcement and other agencies should be given more responsibility for supervising and assisting parolees and they should be financed from part of the $1.5 billion now spent by the state on parolees. Brown said he will meet with state parole officials Friday to discuss his recommendation that local authorities be allowed to jail parolees who commit minor offenses, such as drug possession, for at least seven days so they can receive drug treatment and spiritual counseling. \ Currently, parolees are only held for a few hours unless they're arrested for serious new crimes. "If I don't get what I want, I will go to Arnold (Schwarzenegger) personally," said Brown, who served two terms as governor himself. Brown also said he doesn't think inmates should be allowed to get out of prison unless they have the basic literacy and job skills to be a good citizen when they get out. The only talents inmates currently develop are "highly refined skills in criminal activity," Brown said. The commission's report says the state could save an estimated $151 million next year by using alternatives to prison for the large percentage of non-violent violations that involve drug use and possession. The state could achieve annual savings of $300 million by reducing revocation sentences for some parolees from an average of 140 days to 100 days, according to the report. Ah, maybe the cutoff time is midnight (I'm in Southern CA, near Perris)... I've been trying to find out the liquor rules ever since I moved here, but no one seems to know. So far I've never been told I couldn't buy liquor (in the 2 1/2 years I've been here), but I'm pretty sure I've never tried after midnight. Actually, most stores out here close at midnight anyway. I believe most clubs stay open and serve alcohol til 2AM though... I guess it just seems like 24/7 to me, having moved here from Texas where you can only buy liquor until 9PM and then not at all on Sundays (but strangely enough you can drink til 2AM in a bar any night of the week). Ok, so you can't buy liquor 24/7 in CA, but it's much easier to be an alcoholic here than it is in TX. Oh wait, maybe that's not a good thing... Throw me out of a plane in a blue Texas sky any day. I am not likely to land in horse shit.
SadSue 0 #42 November 16, 2003 OK beautiful girls and boys...lots of points...if only they were points that actually..uh..er..MATTERED... PROUD? PROUD OF WHAT EXACTLY...killing the Indians? Killing the Mexicans? Pretending the Alamo was about dignity? Shouting out about how cool SXSW is when yet not a single "name" band has ever gotten signed off the bitch...no REAL benefit other than making the business people of Austin rich, what is so cool about this? why is Texas THE #1 killing machine in America,,,is it because you are more just (yeah right) or because when you guys run out of charcoal for your barbecues you require the searing of another kind of flesh? Sad to say, but the history of Tex-iana is even more lamentable than the history of the US....at least the rest of the US only made false promises to the Native Americans, then rounded them up and killed them...whereas YOU GUYS did it to BOTH the Native Americans AND the Mexicans...oops..or am I mistaken...wasn't that called the "Mexican-American War"..... Don't pretend for a moment you "proud" ass bitches that you have ANYTHING to be proud of other than your cunning...because unlike the rest of the US..you were cunning enough to steal YOUR land not ONCE...but TWICE..... Now keep those executions coming you proud ass bitches...I am SO proud to see the harvest of your double thievery......delivered out in body bags....20 a year.....I imagine you are proud of that as well.... congratulations.....Sadistic Sue http://people.smu.edu/rhalperi/pending.html Hope you don't get Banned! taln1rigr 0 #43 November 16, 2003 QuoteThe only thing backwards about Texas is that you can't buy liquor 24/7 in any grocery store like you can in CA. Please specify which part of CA ... I visited area near Travis AFB & was not only hugely disappointed when the clubs stopped serving at midnight but about pooped my pants when I tried to buy beer at convience store & the clerk said they couldn't after 2400hrs ... then she got a queer look on her face & asked me where I was from?!?! At the time it was Pensacola, FL where you can buy beer 24/7 ... well, almost ... alcohol can be sold after 1200hrs on Sunday ... but the rest of the sin loving week is free game!! Kennedy 0 #44 November 16, 2003 didn't your parents ever teach you people NOT TO FEED THE TROLLS? ...and people wonder why I've come to the conclusion that a great many liberals really don't like our country...witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
SadSue 0 #45 November 16, 2003 As far as I know it is illegal to serve alch after 2 am in a bar, and i'd be hard pushed to find a place open serving alchohol after 11 pm. BTW thanks ken for heads up lmaoooooooooooo!!! ITS ALL ABOUT ROCK N ROLL, check the music out from state to state, you guys are clever enuf to make your own minds up. I never rate you people as slack, hell this is the best place I've ever posted my views, and I will concede when Im all wrong... but so far.... I'm NOT convinced! That's just my take guys. Its MY right to communicate my beliefs like it is yours, and I will never back down unless you can convince me that the history books are all wrong! As much as it seems I hate you all, this is not the case... this for me is a learning experience. I just know what i have read and since I mix with a large variation in population, I will have many objectives, some of which you may or may not be firmilar with. If i push your buttons then so be it, I want you to say how you really feel, regardless of if I think it's right or wrong! People are people, thats what makes me so crazy. I accept hate because most people do it better then love, and regardless of what you might thnk, that is TRUE! I come from a war torn country were terrorist run riot and the USA supports it. U may think I'm a trouble maker but surely you can understand that this is the INTERNET...Im not likely to show up at your door and blow you away.. PLEEEEEEEEEAASEEEEEEE!!! Why not tear strips outta me... I can take that shit, I just learn from what I have experienced and I dont hang with an all WHITE crowd. Alls fair in love an war! Isn't it??????? Hope you don't get Banned!
Stik 0 #46 November 16, 2003 I for one think that it is great that people in Kalifornia think of TEXAS this way. Please stay on the west coast and don't come to TEXAS. Thanks. Pete

Umm, if you don't like SXSW then why did you go there more than once? Just curious, Sue, but what is your sudden beef with Texas? (Or are you just having a fun time wearing the troll hat, knowing how defensive Texans will get if you insult their state? ) Having lived in both TX and CA, I'd say they both have their good and bad points - neither is really better or worse (though damn I miss that Texas barbecue!)... And the whole "my state is better than your state" seems pretty highschool-ish to me anyway. (Or is that exactly what the troll was going for? )
vonSanta 0 #50 November 16, 2003 Knew this would be entertaining. Even I know not to mess with "the small US neighbor Texas" or diss Texans. And I live in Denmark. Coincidentally, if it is freedom to drink you want, come to Denmark. We Drink All Night. As in "it's noon the next day, wanna go to an afterparty?"
