Anyone been to Belize lately?

Recommended Posts

Just doing some day dreaming on how to get rich. If you've been there.....let me know how it is. The real estate seems reasonable. Public utilities, medical dental, and all the other "necessaries" seem to be there. Plus...it's warm, the ocean is beautiful, and there is close access to some of the "wilder" parts of Central America. Seems like a nice place to put your feet up.

I take it you've done at least some minimal research, such as checking out the State Department's web site to find out what the social temperature is in that part of the world? ;)

Costa Rica and Belize are the "sleepy" parts of C.A. Crime rates probably aren't much differen't than the US. Lower in many cases. Nothing like Southern Panama or the border regions of Mexico.

okay, since you've adequately answered MY question, I'll field yours: uh, not really dude. :PB|

I've been to Ireland, the Yucatan peninsula, Dominica, Barbados, BVI and USVI, but I've yet to make it to Belize. It's on my list. Right after Thailand, Philippines, Italy, Greece and half dozen other locations. B|

I went to CoCo View a couple of years back - its in the honduran bay islands. There was an awful lot of US owned "Settlements" there and the owner of the dive place was a US citizen - and we talked quite a bit about it....

He liked everything about it but the medical quality. And other than a few guards at the bank holdin uzi's, and the dirt-poor areas (I've never seen it that poor before) -

Everything I have heard is that Belize and Honduras are a lot alike - but never been there... yet.

Last year I spent a week there doing demos for Maya Island Air. The people are very friendly but then we were putting on a show for them. The country is very poor and HIV rate is high. We were told while in Belize City, the capital, not to leave the Hotel compound after dark. So of the best diving in the world and the fishing is great. Check the Belize web site, if you retire there with so much coming in you get some kind of break. English is the national language.

I am leaving for Belize for a 6 day stay on the 26th. My girlfriends family just retired there. They are on the island of Ambregis Caye. A little North of San Pedro town. Her dad just had the 800ft pier finished. I posted in the places to Jump section about trying to hook up a skydive down there. I am taking my rig with me just in case I can make it happen. There is a little airport in San Pedro town. Her dad said there are a lot of private pilots there. Tropic air is one of the puddle jumpers that fly back and forth from the mainland. They fly Cessna caravans. I am sure finding a landing area might be a little tough. I made some beach jumps in Playa Del Carmen back in June. Talk about a small landing area. I will let you know how it turns out when I return. I plan on scuba diving for sure. I hear its the place to dive. Maybe you should retire there and open a DZ.:P

Actually, Belmopan is the capital. Belize City is the largest, though, and most traveled.

Belize is beautiful, but hauling your rig around will be a major pain in the ass... leave it at home on this trip, make some contacts and if you can, arrange skydiving for the NEXT trip, take your rig at that time.

When in Rome... but you ain't in a skydiving country. You'll open yourself to theft, etc. by carrying something as foolish as a skydiving rig where none is available.

Enjoy Belize for what it is, leave the rig at home on this trip. In six days, you'll barely be able to slow down to the Belizean pace... (go to Caye Caulker where the motto is "Go Slow.")

Chris

(about 8 or 9 trips to Belize, no skydiving available, none needed there...)

I just found out from My girlfriends dad that two Tropic Air pilots are their neighbors. He said there are a number of pilots that live on the Island. He is almost positive that I would be able to make a skydive. Now finding suitable landing area might be another problem. I am counting down the minutes till I leave. 6 day 10hours and 33 secs.:P But who's is counting?:P
