Just another day on the river

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm glad to see this is still kicking around the internet. I looked at it a while back and tried to determine where it was (and whether it was, perhaps, a little fun with photoshop). Here's what (and how) I found out about it. The link I was originally sent went away at some point [:/]. The web site says it's in Mississippi, but its actually in Alabama...

Mr. Massey,
I finally viewed the pictures that you referred to in your email. These pictures were taken from the Rooster Bridge between Demopolis and Livingston. The Rooster Bridge was a drawbridge with an interesting history. In order to raise money to build the bridge, the community held a rooster auction in 1919. Famous people from all over the United States, including Woodrow Wilson and Mary Pickford, donated roosters for the auction. The bridge no longer exists. The pictures were taken by an amateur photographer, Charles Barger, in April 1979. No one on the boat was hurt, and the bridge only sustained minor damages. Thanks for your interest.

Someone sent me this link today, and I wondered if the lettering on the bridge (partially obscured by a yellow "VERTICAL CLEARANCE" sign) may have originally said "DEMOPOLIS DRAWBRIDGE". I can make out the initial "DEMOP..." and the trailing "...BRIDGE". If you have any information about the bridge, people or events pictured, I'd love to know more.
Thanks!
