riddler 0 #33 November 6, 2003 We have competitive meets where people enter and win prize money. That makes it as much of a sport as soccer or curling. You'll never convince some people. I heard one person state that baseball isn't a sport. His rationale was that "anything you can do while drinking a beer is not a sport" Trapped on the surface of a sphere. SkydiveNFlorida 0 #34 November 6, 2003 You mean skydiving is a sport? Well, I suppose i'm not as lazy as I once thought I was, then Angela.
tenfootswoops 0 #35 November 6, 2003 I totally agree with AndyMan. There are also "events" in the Olympics that are not sports in my mind. Figure skating is a perfect example and similiar to your post. It is a judged event based on artistic impression. Speed skating is a sport. Ice hockey is a sport. I love skydiving and would like to compete but I don't categorize it as sport. D.J.
KerMor 0 #36 November 6, 2003 If you include packing, then skydiving is definitely a sport You can't determine the length of your life - but you can control its height and depth.
Hazarrd 1 #37 November 6, 2003 ive only ran into this problem once, and its one of my roomates who will go into nonstop forever. ive give up because everytime i try and bring up a good point, he just goes on and on with the same thing. just ignore it and laugh, and try not to let it get to you. who gives a shit if someone doesnt think its a sport. .-. Squeak 17 #38 November 6, 2003 I think there is a sport aspect to skydiving, but jumping out of a planes and falling isn't necassarily a sport. Just like riding a push bike to the corner shop isn't a sport, but competitive road racing is.just my $0.02c (AUD)You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! tigra 0 #39 November 6, 2003 I stopped trying to "justify" skydiving to wuffos a long time ago, and really, isn't that what this question is about? Its just not worth the time to argue with someone who will never get it. Just walk away.
dbagdrew 0 #40 November 6, 2003 I agree with Squeak, skydiving, when you are talking about competing and training, then we definitely have a sport. But doing a couple jumps a month is much more of a hobby or an "activity", as a friend of mine calls it.Education: that which reveals to the wise, and conceals from the stupid, the vast limits of their knowledge. - Mark Twain

sburkart 0 #43 November 6, 2003 I'd say define "sport." Even for a hobbyist like me it's a pretty physical endeavor- hell, it's got me working out at two gyms- and there seems to be no shortage of skilled, competitive and athletic types running around the DZ who would look just as at home on any kind of field or court. And there are a number of teams there and competitions are held every year. Hmm... I dunno. I quit trying to blow a ball past guys when it became obvious they were getting twice as big and half as old as me, and the thrill of trying to catch, block or dodge a bullet hit back up the middle was getting beyond my idea of "sport", so I retired from all of that. It's true the Earth is MUCH bigger than me. And it is also true that it is spinning at a couple of thousand miles per hour while traveling 50-some thousand miles per hour through space. Taking a 120 MPH run at it probably isn't a good idea for most people on most days. Okay, maybe I'm cocky, but the book says I am billions of years younger than the Earth and, more importantly, it's a lefty. I OWN lefties. Game, set, match. See? It's a sport.
