Which DZ has less wind for landings

Recommended Posts

I find myself in an interesting position. My job may not last much longer (I'm working at a start up software company) and while I absolutely love Colorado, it's not a cheap place to live and may have to leave the state sometime in the future.

Anyway ... if I decided to spend sometime (sort of like a vacation before returning to reality) jumping at some of the bigger DZs in the country (Eloy, Perris, Elsinore, Sebastian or Z-Hills) which DZ am I likely to encounter less wind? I realize that the WX changes with the seasons, but this potential time away from home would likely be spend in the Fall, Winter or Spring months. I'm thinking Eloy would have the least winds, but maybe I'm wrong. What do you think?

i've never been out west to eloy or perris, but of the FL DZs you want an inland DZ for less wind.

ZHills winds are usually light and variable, picking up in late afternoon as expected. Deland is similar in my experiences there.

In the spring check out cross keys in NJ or the ranch as well.

Yes at some point I need to visit Texas. It would be cool to visit where you and Pablito jump and I also have a friend who jumps out of Skydive Dallas. But any Texas trip would likely only be for a week or so. I was thinking of taking an extended trip where I used some of my savings for food and lodging and hopefully make some $$$ packing (and maybe even tandem video if I can prove myself in that realm) and use money earned at the DZ for fun jumps.

Well in Arizona there is either no to little wind or lots of wind, but that lots of wind doesn't last that long, most of the time.

That is very much the impression I had from my week in Eloy last x-mas.

You have to come to Arizona, because I am here and we are suppose to get married remember? ;)

Oh I haven't forgotten. In fact you and I can make a quick trip up to Vegas during the Holiday Boogie right?

Perris, Elsinore and Eloy seem to have more days of light and variable wind than Sebastian does (I haven't jumped at the others on your list). The western dz's on your list also get lots of turbulence during the spring and summer.

After 7 years at Perris I'm loving the (mostly) butter smooth air in Florida. For me it's worth sacrificing a few days to high or gusty winds (or a few hours for the daily rainstorm to pass over ;)) in exchange for not bouncing around in turbulence from opening to landing, not having to worry so much about my canopy collapsing on final and seeing/avoiding dust devils.

The gators are an issue here though. At least that's what they tell me. :D

Ohhh can we have Elvis marry us too? What a great white trash wedding! I was however thinking more along the lines of being married in the skyvan and such...afterall skydivers need skydiving weddings and receptions. Plus everyone will already be there for the boogie so we can save money on invitations...;) which of course leaves us more jump ticket money...

Z-Hills does not usually have too much wind.

We have a KICK-ASS Swoop Pond as mentioned.

We HAVE KICK-ASS PARTIES & lots of Nig Noggery.

Lots of outs with nice green grass so as not to damage the canopy.

The weather is unbeatable this time of year. Not too hot or too cold.

Friendly People & Staff.

Did I Mention the KICK-ASS PARTIES? :D

JUst saw the work aspect. You might be able to get work at Z-Hills; maybe not a ton but a little.

Unless I had a really bad spot, I wasn't worried about jumping in Sebastian as my canopy seemed to do quite well gliding back to the DZ (of course we had some decent tails winds last weekend which didn't hurt). The landing pitch wasn't as nicely maintained as Eloy though (I have no idea what the grass is like in Perris, Elsinore and Z-Hills as I have yet to jump at any of those places). Having a swoop pond to play in (once my skills are up to the task) is a bonus and Eloy and Sebastian don't have those. :)

I knew I was marrying you for a reason. Because you're always thinking about your next jump.

Sebastian does have a swoop pond....it's called the "Intracoastal Waterway".

Long walk back to the DZ, though...;)

Right On, Brother. This is a good rebuttle

Hard to argue when someone just posted their high wind jump.

Not too mention that sand. It just destroys canopies! :P

Had to throw that in their Girlie. I am sorry to hear of ya'll's misfortune.

Or you could use the ponds at the golf course. ;) The walks not quite as long.

Now why didn't I think of that. I wonder what the golf course management people would do if all of a sudden a bunch of swoopers start using one of their ponds on a regular basis. :$

Holy carp (the fish)! You actually made me laugh out loud at work...and after a call that made me want to discorporate on the spot. :D

You're right, waiting blows worse than the wind., and not paying for a jump rules. B|B|
