What's the purpose of the political threads?

Recommended Posts

Viewing the political news from your perspective must be amazing. I'm envious. Having a relatively clean slate to work off of. I don't know with how much fervor politics gets discussed in South Africa, or Europe, but I can say in the US it's pretty much a passtime. ;)
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

I'm all about things openning up (my canopy, the next cold beer, her:ph34r:), but who was it that said "if you don't stand for somethin, you'll fall for anything?"
witty subliminal message
Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards.

I am not belittling the importance of "making up one's mind" or taking a stand. It's certainly interesting think about how one's mind may be made up in today's environment.

I've learned quite a bit, both because of what other people say and the research I end up doing to answer their arguments.

>I'm in horror thinking about what Talk Back will be like 1 year from now.

In a year, there will be separate forums for politics, religion, Jessica and Sunshine's sexual habits, how fake Point Break was, and why Miller is better than Bud. So you'll be able to choose exactly what you want to see.

Thanks for the chuckle Bill. Married life must be agreeing with you.:)

That is exactly it! While we do have freedom of expression and press etc etc, with the ruling party in an overwhelming majority and likely to be so for a long time to come, there is almost no political debate amongst ordinary citizens here. Not much point really:P On the other hand, we were all watching with amusement (and secretely hoping the he would) the Governator winning by a landslide. Mostly we are ignorant of the issues involved, hence my fascination and interest in the debates on this and other forums.
The boring gun-control and 'should-I-shoot-first-and then-ask-questions' debates are so tedious though that I try to avoid them at all costs.

I only read about 5-6 threads out of Talkback anymore (unless its 2:30 in the morning and I can't sleep)since I just don't have any interst in a lot of the topics.

Phew! I thought perhaps I was an oddball for only selecting a few topics a day to stay involved in, none of them having to do with religion, politics or...or...hmmm, I think that about covers my "do not reply" list. B|

I couldn't even tell ya.... I try to stay as far away as possible...

Kinda like the girl in Art school that costs 60,000 dollars to attend that has a stong passionate angst ridden aversion to making money and corporate america going to school on daddy's dollar... wide berth.

Accelerate hard to get them looking, then slam on the fronts and rollright beside the car, hanging the back wheel at eye level for a few seconds. Guaranteed reaction- Dave Sonsky

While it is not their purpose, the political threads do allow us to see a different side of the other people in this community, and I think that is a benefit.

I am constantly amazed by the diversity of views held by skydivers. Because we have skydiving in common, I have a tendency to believe that everyone here will have similar views to mine. Sometimes I am a little surprised by the views people have, and it gives me additional insight into the people with whom I interact here.

I have also found that the individual issue threads are more enlightening than the overall left/right threads, because quite often people with whom I very strongly agree on one issue are the very same people with whom I very strongly disagree on others.

I consider myself conservative, and I'm sure most of you would lump me in that basket. However, I often find myself agreeing on some issues with folks here whom I consider to be neon-sign carrying liberals.

I think it is all fun and interesting, and just like I accept that my friends in real life have different views than mine, I accept that my friends here may have different views than mine, as well.

If I've learned anything from all these threads, it is that people are far more difficult to label than most folks let on, and that even carefully crafted labels are not very good predictors of opinions on the diversity of issues worthy of discussion we face as a society.

It's to goad the right wingers into long replies. I figure the time they spend typing reduces the time they can spend making real trouble.

Looking at the America in Iraq thread, it seems to me that both sides are equally adept at lengthy replies...:P

:D

Yes, but it's clear that the right wingers have much more difficulty with written English so they still take longer to type their responses.:)
