FliegendeWolf 0 #26 October 29, 2003 QuoteThe reason[(only opinion) but it makes sense] that we have such a hard time with quitting cigs is that we are actually addicted to the chemicals in them. This is true, but it doesn't account for the fact that people have cravings years after their last cigarette. That is more a function of learned behavior, which is much more insidious and difficult to break than a chemical addiction. Ever notice how so many drugs involve a "ritual" element to them? Cooking heroin, rolling a joint, etc. Isn't the ritual half of the experience?A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
AriWeil 0 #27 October 29, 2003 The last time I quit I started running like a madman every day. The cravings went away after a few weeks, and while I was running I kept telling myself, "This is only so difficult because you smoke you moron." Sounds stupid, but it helped. I was able to stay away from cigarettes for over a year, but then again, my job had me working from 8 am until anywhere between midnight and 3 am and I was going to the gym and running at 6:30 am. I didn't go to bars, and my smoking friends moved away, so it was pretty easy to resist temptation the few times I was around smokers. As soon as I moved to Chicago and started hanging out with smokers again, I started right back up. Good luck.
FliegendeWolf 0 #28 October 29, 2003 That's a really good point. Probably the reason I was able to quit at all was because I moved away from all of my smoking friends. Again, it removed the cues and behavioral associations.A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
Keith 0 #29 October 29, 2003 I took the chickenshit way out. I got my doctor to put me on Zyban. The worst part was the side effects from Zyban. I always felt like I was on the verge on ODing on caffeine. It sure was easy to quit though.Keith Don't Fuck with me Keith - J. Mandeville

batbex 0 #31 October 29, 2003 well skydiving doesn't count as a substance - but if you did try - would any one actually be able to give it up? you'd wander around on cloudless days staring at the sky and get onto commercial airlines with a tear in your eye...
