Driving to Eloy at Christmas

Recommended Posts

I've decided to go to Eloy for the Christmas holiday boggie(YIPPEEE !!!!) and will leave St.Louis, Mo on the 21st or so. My question is; When I cross the New Mexico border on IH40 and get to Holbrook, AZ. is it better to take Hwy.77 south through "Snowflake, AZ." to Hwy. 60 at "Show Low AZ." and on toward Eloy????? If I stay on IH40 to Flagstaff, then south through Phoenix, it looks a little longer, but all Interstate. Has anyone driven out on Hwy. 60 before? I plan on just taking my time and doing a slow road trip, but I don't know the area / roads / gas stations out there. Any idea's or insight would be appreciated.
Thanks......

Go south, young man :)
Personally, I don't like Flagstaff that much. Yes, it's more of a major highway, but here's something to keep in mind - the elevation there is pretty darn high - close to 7,000 feet, so if you have a car that doesn't climb very well, it's gonna be tough. Also, if it's snowing anywhere at all in Arizona, it will be snowing in Flagstaff. And definitely don't spend the night there unless you like trains :S But if you do go through Flagstaff, don't go south on 17 right away - take a short detour 89A through Sedona - very beautiful drive.

It's all much better on a motorcycle B|

Have fun...heh. I'm driving in from Texas (again, 3rd time going to Eloy via my truck) and the drive is the only shitty part of the trip. I can do about 12 hours before getting giddy, after that I start going crazy (and driving faster) since I want to be done with the trip. All in all its about a 17hr drive (if I do 80mph). I get the "fun" route, though. Basically, get to I-10 in Texas (couple hours of driving), then stay on I-10 until I hit Eloy. A bit over 1/2 the driving is just in Texas.

Check your PMs...there's several routes to get there, and it depends on what you want. Speed? Scenery?

Speed: I-40 to I-25 to I-10.

Scenery: Grants, NM to Quemado, Quemado to Show Low, etc.

I'd say through Flagstaff is the longest route, even if it is all interstate.
