judd 0 #1 October 24, 2003 Im a student pilot and soon to be jumper, and ive noticed a major difference between the 2 groups of people pilots are calm cool collected and generally very low key about their flying, where jumpers are loud , rad and bad. thats not to say jumpers are inferior--its just that pilots are like the skiiers while jumpers are like the snowboarders, if you catch my drift. compare the threads here to studentpilot.com and youll see what i mean
skydivejersey 0 #2 October 24, 2003 Not true. A great number of skydivers are also pilots but we just know that the real thrill is getting out.

Tonto 1 #7 October 24, 2003 Picture the scene. You arrive at a party. Things are rocking, the music's too loud to speak or be heard, and you know no-one. How do you know who the pilot is? He'll tell you. Now since driving a plane is so much fun - why would you want to come and play with us? My experience is that those who skydive and become pilots become GREAT jump pilots, and those pilots who become jumpers break their legs. (Although in all fairness I only know 5 pilots that fit that category, and there are 6 I know who tried skydiving.) Now, arn't you the guy who's having problems with mommy? Maybe you should get a place of your own before coming onto a skydiving site and slagging us all off. Just a thought. Use it, don't use it. tIt's the year of the Pig. jerry81 10 #8 October 24, 2003 Really, in my (somewhat limited, to be honest) experience, pilots can be much worse than jumpers. But I jump in a country where skydivers are often looked upon as second-class people on airfields where we jump. Perhaps if we had a real dropzone or two it would allow our collective character to fully emerge. As for loud and rad- I've never flown a plane, but I doubt it gives you such an intense feeling of being alive. I know our equipment is much safer now, but I still feel like I've cheated death each time the canopy opens. And for me that's reason enough to be loud. skydivejersey 0 #9 October 24, 2003 of the 40+ members of our skydiving club 6 are pilots. Thats quite a lot compared to the general public.
skydivejersey 0 #10 October 24, 2003 I went to our Aero Club AGM yesterday. God it was painful. From complaints to the staff getting free membership to backstabbing and bitching about an above the cost of living increase in hanger space. Our skydiving club AGM is being held on the 20th December, when we will get a helicopter in to play with for an afternoon, everyone will be wearing Santa / Raindeer / Snowman suits as they're hanging of the strut over the beach and then we'll be partying until we can party no more in the evening.... Tell me now who's got it right!
jumperconway 0 #11 October 24, 2003 IMHO, You can go to 5 different DZs and come away with 5 different perseptions of jumpers. Free fliers are like snowboarders and RW jumpers are like skiers.
judd 0 #12 October 24, 2003 woah tonto i never meant this post in a derogatory way toward skydiving. i think skydivers are really brave. what i was trying to say was that skydivers have a "coolness" to them that pilots lack. sort of like snowboarders. please dont think i meant anything bad, i was just trying to start a conversation comparing pilots to skydivers and "bad and rad" was a poor choice of words. regarding problems from mommy, i dont live at home anymore but i keep my mother up to date, and she practically begged me to cancel
Tonto 1 #13 October 24, 2003 I have a problem with impulse control. Sorry. You described pilots the way I like to think of professional ANYTHING, and then went on to call us "bad." Well, I'm to old to stand in the corner. I'm not bad. I'm on my way to the DZ because it's 17h09 and I'm going to SKYDIVE! tIt's the year of the Pig. FrogNog 1 #17 October 24, 2003 >> skydivers are really brave >Thats a weird statement. Not sure I really >understand it. People who run into burning >buildings are brave. Skydivers are out for a good. time! I consider the bravery of Skydivers and pilots equal. Skydivers jump out of a perfectly good airplane with a well-tuned rig with _two_ canopies. Pilots fly a tin can with wings and bring it back to earth as consistently as possible, and they let skydivers ride with them and jump out and sometimes hang out for a bit outside the door. If something goes wrong, the pilots will do everything they can to take care of their passengers, including controlling a sick plane in some circumstances while the divers bail. If the trimwheel falls off right before cut, or some other "minor" thing in the plane breaks at a safe altitude and place, the divers almost certainly get out and have a near-normal ride. But the pilot probably has to ride the plane back in with e.g. elevator trim stuck one position. And lastly, when a pilot _does_ jump, he jumps with one chute, it's a round, and he doesn't always spot! -=-=-=-=- Pull.
