Have we gone mainstream?

Recommended Posts

Work with me here for a minute...

Today's morning newspaper has the normal amount of trashy colour ads for the electronics shops, and chain stores. they all pretty much sell TV's and of course they never show just a blank screen, do they? So what on every one of those TV's ...?

Future shop: dude in a black RW suit in a flat track. Strange considering he is shown about 50 feet below a twin otter. Larger TV's also show two others freeflying dive exists.

The Brick (Furniture): 1/2 page ad on the front page of section 2. 47 inch Panasonic projection TV for $1998. 10 way star... could be the GK's (identical white RW suits with black containers and multicoloured reserve flaps)

Best Buy (and my university's "Job Postings" cover): The now famous purple freefliers picture that gets used "everywhere"

***

So whassup? Is it the same where you live or are the stoic and boring Canadian media simply getting adventurous? Considering the active jumping population in Canada is only a couple thousand, I don't think it is our incredible market presence, so vote already...

that's interesting. I don't really watch my tv/pay attention to ads, etc.. so i haven't noticed anything. good question though.

I think it's for the Opel Zafira advert on TV in europe, skydiving pics...
and also for Fa deo or something, a beautiful girl jumps, deploys, gets rid of her rig and suit (in the air) and dives in the water

Without seeing the pic, it sounds like the dream team.

TLC has had a sky surf guy on their webpage for ever it seems now.

Maybe the companies just use it to make the couch potatoes feel cool. The people see the ad and the picture, and think that buying that TV will help make them cool, turn them into some crazy person who lives for the edge.
Think about all those wash board abs on infomercials selling exercise equipment.

I'd say skydiving is pretty mainstream at this point... Seems like everyone I meet lately has either done a tandem, knows someone who has done a tandem, or knows someone who is a regular jumper... I guess that would be considered "mainstream"??? Oh well, doesn't make much difference to me...

I saw a print ad recently for an inusrance company or something where some guy was belly flying and you saw an otter in the background.....
Everytime I turn around, I see something new,

Yeah, we're definitely mainstream :(

I posted something on BLiNC today that was very similar. I found this leafing through the new fall Crutchfield catalog last night. Thought it was quite interesting...:|

I'm not so sure the use of skydiving/BASE photos in advertising means we're mainstream.

I'm an art director (in an ad team, I do the picture part, the copywriter does the word part).

If I had to do an ad like the crutchfield thing, I'd want to put an image in that TV that was clean and simple with some kind of visual interest - to keep the reader looking for that few extra seconds. (It's not really a selling technique - it looks better in our portfolios!)

Sky vistas or mountain vistas with a person jumping works beautifully. It just as easily could have been a surfer. My guess is that it's not only just a trend to use 'sky sports' but also that with all the reality crap on TV, we're desensitized and it takes more and more to grab someone's attention.

Look at it this way, whoever took that photo got a nice $$ for it. Doesn't hurt the profitablility of being a freefall/BASE photographer! :)

aah, another 'Northerner'. At least youze guys get World Rally Championship action in the winter :). The extra 475,000 people haven;t helped us much wither as we too are still a 1 Cessna DZ - hence the 'teasing me' option.

Update:

Today it was a tandem being 'advertised' on a Hansol Flat panel monitor... Maybe this IS a campaign to heighten skydive awareness.

We got over 6 inched of snow yesterday and there's more on the way. Jump season is DEFINITELY over for us.

Oh well.
