I've done this kinda stuff before its just that i mostly lived on instant noodles which ain't the most interesting or tasty food in the world... Any tips would be apreciated :)

pa2themd 0 #3 October 24, 2003 We always take some meat and cook it the first night, you can get alot of that dehydrated stuff from hiking shops also, if u add enough spices its tasty! Tin food is also nice but heavy, so it all depends on how much u wanna carry vs how much u miss good food!! I normmally take peanuts and raisins good for energy and some sucking sweets. I hope that helps "Most of us can read the writing on the wall; we just assume it's addressed to someone else!" Ivern Ball

skybytch 273 #5 October 24, 2003 Backpacker.com has a forum all about backcountry cooking. There are also a few good books out on the subject. Both go way beyond ramen and instant oatmeal. A five day trip? I'm jealous... I've yet to do even an overnight, and it doesn't look like there's much good hiking in FL (other than day hikes). gulaz 1 #7 October 24, 2003 I bought a food dehydrater before my last trip... worked great. What I found was the best meal we had, (and we had it 3 times...) was just regular spaghetti sauce, dehydrated, and spaghetti. The sauce gets really light, and small, and the pasta is already. Really good for you, and tasty too. We also made a shitload of beef jerky, and fruit leather and stuff with it. Worth the investment.

somethinelse 0 #11 October 24, 2003 Good outfitter Stores have a pretty good supply of dehydrated foods and one-dish meals. Some of it is pretty tasty too. Yeah, gorp/trial mix for the sweet tooth. Oatmeal if you like that. Personally I gotta have coffee...BUT I haven't figured out how to best to make good camp coffee yet! DO you worry about bears where you're going? Low tech: Granola bars Apples (dried apples, even better) Pita bread Peanut butter Gatorade mix Raisins (better yet, raisins, nuts and M+M's) String cheese High tech: Power bars Those dried food dinners from REI If you are going to have to carry water in, go with regular food (like regular apples.) You'll need the water in it anyway. If you are going to pick up water along the way, go with the dried stuff. Bring a filter if you're going to drink from streams. Crypto is no fun. Plus they taste like sunflower seeds only bigger. Fly it like you stole it!
 Join the conversation You can post now and register later.
