TheAnvil 0 #4 October 21, 2003 Dude I had a good friend in undergrad almost die doing this. I urge you not to do it. Fun, but stupid. He was in a wheel chair for about four years and is only able to walk with a cane now due to some pretty amazing advances in surgical reconstruction. bch7773 0 #5 October 21, 2003 I've never heard of it, but I'm wildly guessing that they get on top of the elevator and "surf it" as it goes to different floors. I'm kinda curious so someone point out what it really is. MB 3528, RB 1182
skytash 0 #6 October 21, 2003 have you noticed how everyone just remembers all the accidents and how awful they were? Kinda reminds me of when I mentioned to people I wanted to go skydiving..... I'm not saying that elevator surfing is safe, I have no idea and I doubt there are any stats, but just think about how similar to whuffos we are sounding tashDon't ever save anything for a special occasion. Tonto 1 #7 October 21, 2003 We're not sounding similar to whuffo's. We are people familiar with the concept of putting our lives on the line for a feeling of belonging and self worth. We have seen death seconds after smiling, meaningful eye contact, and we know what "The End" means. "See you tomorrow" are words fraught with doubt for me. I don't give a shit if people want to surf elevators. The more die - the safer we become statistically. tIt's the year of the Pig.

bmcd308 0 #12 October 21, 2003 My buds and I used to do it in college in the 14-story dorm. There were two elevators in the shaft, and it could be really scary if you were on the one going down when the other passed going up. We discussed it drunk, but we had the good sense to wait until we were sober to try it. Make sure you keep someone inside to redock you at the top floor so you can get off. One time two of us were stuck on there for about an hour waiting for someone to get on, then we had to ask them to hit 14 for us. It was a good thing we did not get busted that time, because I am sure we would have gotten in a ton of trouble. All that being said, it is a good way to get killed. I would never do it now, but I was braver and dumber then. Brent ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
swarley 0 #13 October 21, 2003 can someone please explain what it is for crying out loud?!?!? ---------------------------------------------------------- Difficult to "manage risk" doing this! Found on "google" The first kind of surfing is Elevator Surfing. This was first reported in the New York Times between 1986 and 1990. People were getting into elevator shafts, and leaping from the top of one elevator to another. Needless to say, they were practically all young males, typically aged between 5 and 12 years. Between 1984 and March 1991, there were 14 fatalities involving Elevator Surfing in and around the New York area. One older victim was an 18-year-old male student from the University of Massachusetts. The main causes of death were falls, and crush injuries.
projanska 0 #14 October 21, 2003 I think I personally will wait for NASA to haul one of those big-ass space elevator cables to the orbit. Then you can both surf and skydive from.. well, from as high as you want! ___ "Ye Gods!"
Aromain 0 #15 October 21, 2003 Whats really fun in an elevator is going to the top floor and hitting the bottom floor button and jumping up and down on the ride....its like a free fall pick me up for skydivers.------------------------------------------------ "Matter fact go and get your chrome, cause I'd rather be, broke thogether, then rich alone." billvon 2,991 #17 October 21, 2003 >The first kind of surfing is Elevator Surfing. This was first reported in >the New York Times between 1986 and 1990. Geez, I was doing this in 1983. It all started innocently enough. The elevator in our dorm was broken (again) and I was trying to fix it. It was a pretty simple fix, and there's a cartop inspection station that I used to get to the broken limit switch. After that I'd go riding on it when I was feeling antisocial. I'd bring along a tape player and some beer, play some music, and listen to how the resonances of the shaft changed as the elevator moved. "In the material world" by the Police was a good one for that. When I was feeling particularly evil I'd take people on rides. The elevator could travel about five feet lower than the lowest floor before the final limit switch stopped it; it freaked people out to get in on the ground floor and have the elevator go down. champu 1 #20 October 21, 2003 I didn't mean to sound like a whuffo, though perhaps I did. I wouldn't group this kind of activity with a social community of skydivers taking risks they can appreciate, and developing skills. No, I'd group it with riding shopping carts down steep hills with no pads on and sticking bottle rockets in your rear-end while you're friend yells "holy $#|+ that was awesome!" from behind his dad's handy-cam.
