Oh great i have to swim a mile for my swimming class final

Recommended Posts

I have to get up at 6 am and go to pool and swim 1650 yards non-stop. [:/] never swam the mile before i'v always been a 50-200 sprinter. Any of you long distance swimmers got any tips? Andria? i know you did long distance, Daizey?

My trick: once I got my rhythm on (warmed-up, got away from the others ...) I start thinking about something interesting (like what would be my best 10 skydives ;)) It makes my mind go away from the swimming and the time goes way faster :)
My last one was a 2.2 miles swim ... 45 minutes boring as hell :S

good luck :)

Is there some sort of time limit? If not, I'd stick to the "easy" strokes (back, side, breast). Crawling or (god forbid) butterfly will get you there faster but take so much more energy.

I've swum a mile probably 5 times in my life. Once in a pool, 3 times in a lake at summer camp with rescue boats, and once by myself in a lake (stupid idea). I tried a crawl in one of the supervised ones and by the halfway point I had to switch to the elementary backstroke my arms were so tired.

Ouch, that's rough. But I've been there before.
But if its not timed, and not in open water, it could be worse.
Pace yourself, if you go hard from the start your fucked. Try to stay with frontcrawl, headup or whatever, and don't let your form suffer too much.

i'm pretty sure its gonna be freestyle not sure if its timed or not. There isn't a human alive that could survive one mile of butterfly!! I swam the 200 fly for the first time last season of swim team........at a meet! Didn't even get a chance to practice it!!B| that hurt!!!! I actually like the 100 fly for some messed up reason but the 200 is just wrong!!!

I always found freestyle the best for the 500 and up. I would listen to a song or two that I knew ALL the words to before hand because that would be the song stuck in my head. Pace yourself, take even strokes, breath every four strokes at least, and do a lazy kick.

Yes I did long distance and i still do...my new event this year is actually the 1650! :o:S

Anyway, start of slowly. You want to make sure you pace yourself-starting out too fast will just make ya wanna stop.
I would assume you are going to have someone counting your laps for ya? since you aren't being timed...and since its not officially swim season and you don't have to worry about competition-just relax and have fun. I do stupid stuff...i barely ever count my laps-why bother if someone else does it for ya? lol just make sure you look at them every once in awhile!...I usually ditract myself... i think about things, sing songs, count my strokes, look at people around the deck...think about funny stuff ..... I know that sounds funny but it helps... really
Relax and have fun with it-set goals for yourself...since your starting off slow ya may wanna bring it up a step each lap...count your strokes, and try and have one less stroke every X laps...increase your rhythm
Oh! and have a positive attitude! Don't be like, omg i have only swam this many strokes and i have sooo many more to go...think of it as, wow ive already swam this many strokes and i only have this many more to go.
You'll reach a point when it gets easier-for me its typically the 4th lap...after that lap, it gets easier...
You'll be fine tomorrow-I promise! Whatever you do-Don't give up
Oh and most importantly-have fun and let me know how it goes! Hope this helps...even if its just a little...:)

Oh yes there is - I watched a young lady swim across a lake that is a tad over a mile - butterfly the whole way.
Her mom did freestyle, and Sara fairly easily beat her mom :)
But Viking - the mile will be easy for you - you are a great swimmer! It's just a few 400's put together - just pace yourself and take it easy!

You can do it, Arthur! The mile really isn't that bad at all, you just have to get into the rhythm of your stroke where it is comfortable for you. When I was swimming and going to school, I would go over things I needed to study in my head to pass the time. If you don't have to race or beat a certain time, it should be fairly easy. Like Daizy said, think of something else. Hell, Arthur, I swam a 1000 in the 25 yd. hotel pool I was at over the weekend. I did stop every once in awhile, but I was so proud. If I can do that being as out of shape as I am, you can do the 1650! :)
Oh, and I've seen plenty of people swim a mile doing the butterfly. Some people are just naturals at that stroke. Back when I was swimming in the 80's, I worked out in the same pool as Mary T. Meager (the world record holder back then in fly) for a couple of weeks. She was amazing!
She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man,
because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

I'm no swimmer - well, I did couple years of free diving few years back - but I try to swim a mile once or twice a week just to keep in somekind of shape.

It's just time: breast strokes and back strokes are very economical form of swimming, you might want to use those. The beauty of swimming is that you can go as slowly as you want .. unless there's a time limit of course :| Counting strokes helps the time go bit faster.

Actually nowadays I get bored from swimming the 25-yard pool back and forth, luckily one of the local pools has 50-yard pool so I can do my miles.
