what cell phone is best

IMHO, the best is the cheapest.

I got an Audiovox dual-mode CDM-4000 off eBay with a good battery and a charger for a little over ten bucks, and got it activated for pre-paid service at Verizon for $30. That bought 60 peak minutes good for 60 days. Renew with $30 every 60 days. $15 a month for a cell phone isn't bad at all.

It's fine for little things like calling home from the grocery store (which I did the other night - "Sorry, no Hagen-Dazs Coffee ice cream - how about Ben&Jerrys?"), but if you're a gobber or a gadget-junkie, you'll probably want something more recent.

The new phones are great fun of course, with camera attachments, polyphonic rings, etc., but wireless can be had simply and cheaply too.

Depending on your service provider, Motorola makes intuitive and relatively easy to use phones. Samsung has really turned their quality around. If you have an existing carrier, go to their store and hijack a sales rep, they'll hook you up.

don't know about the phone bt alltell treated me right even though they will shut your service of in a heart beat if you are late as in like 1 day after payment is due..... other than that i just swithced because altell is not in my area since i moved, but i had thier nationwide pogram with 3000 night and weekend and 400 daytime for like 50 bucks and it was great, i could get digital or analog roam for no charge in amost all places i traveled and that is from colorado to ohio on i-70 and ilinois to utah on i-80 and almost everywhere else i've ever traveled and that is too long to list... altell is a very good service provider...... btw my phone was a startac andi liked it... the v-70 is just an upgraded model imho i say go for it!!! the little light weight phone i hav now with sprint is little but you have to have the phone just right to hear and it gets anoyihng sometimes...

I've been waiting for the Motorola v600 to come out for MONTHS.

As soon as it does, my SE T68is is going for a skydive (well, it always does), but this time it's not going to be attached to me. It does some things ok, but on the whole it's a POS. Really takes a while to build up the right amount of hate for this particular phone.

I have to add in on the Samsung lovin'. I have the S-105 and I love it. Great color display, easy to use with the web, and the ability to use Java midlet apps is great.

I have mine through T-Mobile and I'm a happy camper.:)

I won't go with Altel, but that's just me personally. If you want the best coverage, look at Sprint or Verizon. If you're going to be using a lot of data (hooking your phone to your computer) go with Sprint. Unless you travel internationally, there really isn't much reason to consider GSM in the states as the coverage is still in its infancy.

There are some really good newsgroups that talk about this kind of stuff. If you want to know what people are saying about phones check out phonescoop.com. You can also check out howardforums.com for info on phones from all manufactures and for what people are saying about each service provider.

Cheers!

I'm a real fan of Nokia.

It matbe more a case of being really used to the logic in the menus and functions, but I find then really easy to use.

Also, the IR function in most of them works real well with Outlook... so well that I dont use my Palm anymore... just my phone. IMHO, Nokia rules if what you want is business functionality.

I like the customer service at T-Mobile but I'm less than pleased with the coverage. I have no service in most part of N.H., Western Mass where I do a lot of hiking and skiing. I have trouble making or receiving a call from the DZ as well.

I'm thinking about going over to Verizon.
As for the phones, I don't care as long as they work.

Good luck!

Call T-Mobile and tell them where you're having coverage trouble. I was having issues up by the 60/71 interchange in California... called them, and they did something, because now it works!

For those that are shopping for service and are thinking about Cingular, T-Mobile or AT&T or most of the European carriers, here an interesting item you should know about the GSM standard:

By John Walko
CommsDesign.com

LONDON - The GSM Association is playing down concerns raised by a team of Israeli scientists about the security of GSM mobile calls.

The researchers, from the Technion Institute of Technology in Haifa, revealed they had discovered a basic flaw in the encryption system of
the GSM (Global System for Mobile) specification, allowing them to crack its encoding system.

The GSM Association, which represents vendors who sell the world's largest mobile system, confirmed the security hole but said it would be expensive and complicated to exploit.

Eli Biham, a professor at the Technion Institute, said he was shocked when doctoral student Elad Barkan told him he had found a fundamental error in the GSM code, according to a Reuters report on Wednesday (Sept. 3). The results of the research were presented at a recent international conference on cryptology.

We can listen in to a call while it is still at the ringing stage, and within a fraction of a second know everything about the user," Biham told the news agency. "Then we can listen in to the call."

"Using a special device it's possible to steal calls and impersonate callers in the middle of a call as it's happening," he added. GSM code writers made a mistake in giving high priority to call quality, correcting for noise and interference and only then encrypting, Biham said. (Comments from me on this paragraph: Considering that GSM is a time-divided technology, giving priority to voice only goes so far anyway.)

I like Nextel because I love the nationwide direct connect and no you do not have to be the annoying person who makes everyone listen to both sides of your conversation in the store and the restaurant. You can turn off the speaker and hold it to your head like a regular phone. The coverage is getting better and better all the times. I liked my little Nokia better with AT&T as far as the size of the phone and the battery but I like the Nextel and have the i95cl.

I like my Samsung N200. I'll be ugrading in te near future though.

I'm staying with Sprint too.

I know they are not perfect, but they cover my home area, and give me inexpensive nationwide roaming and long distance. Sure, it kinda sucks that it's digital only, but hell, driving a semi means I'm on an interstate 98% of the time anyway.
