Can you fly up?

Recommended Posts

All this hurricane talk got me thinking... Would it be possible to fly up (as in takeoff) under canopy in high enough winds? It's probably a Jackass episode in the making. So, don't try it at home!!

Only if you catch a bit of air going up and sideways. But you can get dragged really fast...>:(

Skydiving is easy. All you have to do is relax while plummetting at 120 mph from 10,000' with nothing but some nylon and webbing to save you.

Paragliders do it all the time. They foot launch or tow launch their canopies. On a day with a good wind, at a good site, they just take one or two steps and are flying - and they gain altitude almost immediately.

Of course.....I remember a high wind day 2 winters ago I think. A tandem master that was taking his sweet time gathering up the rig after I had shagged for him. I watched him become airborne when the cells inflated. Then I watched him slam on his back on the tarmac. Then I watched him get drug at a high rate of speed across the tarmac. Then I watched the genious cut away.....and pop the reserve since he hadn't bothered to disco the RSL. Then I saw the damage to the rig....[:/] Other than all the negative things....It was hilarious. I wish I had video. :D
