Recommened Rigs for larger Skydiver

Recommended Posts

I am looking for recommendations for the type rig for a jumper 5'9 255 lbs.
I have already researched the AFF schools and there are 2 in Georgia that can accomodate larger skydivers and so I will have a decision to make within the next few months.
Any help will be appreciated.

It is great that you are so excited about skydiving that you are looking forward to having your own gear, but it is much too early to be concerned about that yet.

I think you should use your strong desire to skydive motivate you to be really serious about losing weight. Many problems you'll face skydiving will disappear when gravity has less influence on you. :D

People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

This is so true,,, my first jump was at 270 pounds on a Man of War 320 with a very large reserve. Crawling around in the 182 was very difficult, getting a stable exit (dynamic exit) extremely difficult, soft landings, next to impossible. It was difficult enough that I quit jumping for a year to lose some weight, went back into jumping the following year at 208 pounds, what a huge difference, all my problems from the previous year just disappeared.

Thanks I will push myself harder and set my jump date to May 2012 my 50th birthday

Not to plie on, but if you're overweight and approaching 50, the weight loss is all that much more important.

If you start skydiving, you WILL have a hard landing at some point. The amount of weight you're carrying around will dictate the amount of energy your skeletal system will have to absorb when you hit. More weight = more force, plain and simple.

No offence to anyone at or near 50 years old, but your skeletal system's strength and ability to heal are not at their 'peak'.

Skydiving is a young man's sport. There are older jumpers, and there are overweight jumpers, but rarely do you see the two combined. The older guys at the DZ are generally in good shape, and almost always tough as nails. The overweight crowd is generally younger, and typically don't last very long.

I'm not suggesting you don't jump, just trying to give you the real facts so you can make an infomed decision about jumping, weight loss and how the two go together.

( From a guy over 50...): As well as regular working out to maintain muscle strength, mass and tone.

From another guy way over 50 that wishes he would have taken better care of himself when he was young!:)
