If you want to really confirm your tastes, I recommend *The Jungle*, but Upton Sinclair. It was written circa 1906 and the response by the US Gov was to put into place the first Food and Drug Act.
Chapter 14 is my personal fav.

Errrr.....actually, I still eat meat from a can (albeit rarely). The things that really concern me are in the attachment.

ICK!! I've heard about that book from lots of people. Maybe I'll get it next time I'm at the library. I think my days of steak on the grill will be long gone after that I'm sure.
Great book from what I hear.

It's a good read for the shock value of the packing houses, as well as social value - the book was written as a socialist text. Once you get past the graphic descriptions (it's a yo yo kind of story) it becomes a treatise on the beginnings of the Socialist movement in the US. That's OK, but it killed the story for me, reading it almost 100 years after it was written.
Read it if you are at all interested. Just so you know, I had to read two novels during the reading of *The Jungle* so that I could come back and keep my interest!
