Any ideas on how to rescue my Excel? Computer help..

Recommended Posts

OK...I'm getting really annoyed. I installed microcrap office a couple months ago. Everything worked great until 2 weeks ago when Excel just refuses to work. Everytime I open any excel file wether from hard disk, email, or floppy I get a "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." error. I have run scan disk, rebooted, and even re-installed all the "nuts and bolts" files from my CD. Any guesses on how to fix it other than a hammer?

Clay,

Do you have important crap in any excel file? Maybe you could send me an *.xls file by e-mail, I'll take a look, but it seems that you will need to completely unistall excel, and install it again.

Whack in your office cd (do all this from the control panel add/remove programs) and run a repair. Helps 99% of the time. Otherwise backup all your docs, uninstall Office and reinstall.

She'll be apples:)

Have you tried hitting the monitor or kicking your computer unit? Running a virus scan? Just open up the raw code and change a few things...that should do it...

Seriously, do any of your other MS-Office apps do that? Like PowerPoint or Word?

Nah...hitting or kicking should do it... :P
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

Gee... 2 weeks ago huh? I'll bet you have a Virus. the Blaster one to be specific. It over wrote some files that were required for Office to work.

Run a virus scan, remove the virus and then repair office. Problem fixed in 20 minutes max.

Huh....well...I just figured out a way around it. I went into "Find files" and put in "excel." Lots of folders came up and I opened one of the many "application" files. It opened NO problem. So....while I had that open I went back and double clicked one of my saved files out of "My Briefcase." It opened no problem. Let me type and even print and save. So....it must be the pathway from my saved files is through a corrupted app file. Hmmmm...

That's the weird part. That was my FIRST suspicion. So I made sure I updated and then ran a new scan. Nada. Using Norton 2000. I have seen something else strange though. On start up now and again I get the "Illegal Operation" error for something called "runonce" Not sure what the hell that is......

This is just a poor uninstall, and something goofy with the registry--NOT a virus. I've seen and fixed this issue numerous times. Not only do you need to Uninstall the software, you need to scour the registry and program folders for left behind parts and remove them also. Uninstall does NOT remove everything, and corrupted entries do not get replaced during reinstall. I cannot do all that for ya from here, but I am PM'ing you instructions to export your RunOnce and Run reg keys so I can fix those for ya.

Hey guys... I talked to Clay, and we went through a bunch of troubleshooting... and in the end, explorer was faulting in safe mode (For those of you that don't know... this is a really REALLY bad sign). More troubleshooting revealed his hard drive is failing.

Its an old computer and its dying. [:/] all the windows/office bashing was not appropriate here :P because it was a hardware issue that even MACs are susceptible to.

I guess none of us saw that one coming.

your lucky clay, it could be worse. the time and money you gonna spend fixing it aint worth it. spend 2-300 on a real cheap emachine unless you need big guns.
