BASE813 0 #1 August 25, 2003 I am just wondering............... i am not trying to belittle or slate what bridge day means............. I can understand sort of why people want to go there and BUT if you are making this to make a break into BASE jumping does doing one or two jumps at this festival earn you any respect from your locals so then they will start taking you out? What do the experienced BASE'rs think about this circus? is it really what BASE is about? (I apologise if this sounds belittling but from here miles and miles away I dont see the attraction at all) I took a CR course where I did several jumps off a Span in the USA that is legal - although I had done some jumps - i still was not metally prepared for the emotions that you then feel having to sneak about in the dark and go away without trace. (The Morpheus FJC does intro you to this real side) It all seems to me that it is more of a "fair ground ride" then actually making a real BASE jump - I know this will probably give me some flaming over this - but please I just dont get it!................... .........now awaiting flames and agression - but I am just asking......... apologies......... Faber 0 #2 August 25, 2003 i think its a great thing that we can have this event, but i do agree that first timers shouldnt jump at that event.Im affraid some will do it just not to lose face to public. But a great event for experienced jumpers or jumpers that knows they will back off if it aint right... and now to the flaming... your a fat kid Stay safe Stefan Faber
BASE813 0 #3 August 25, 2003 I agree its a good event in the fact it shows BASE in a positive and exceptable view - but dont you think it is more of a circus than BASE? It seems (from some video and reports I have read) general BASE views go out of the window - (FX70 something TARD for example) - I just think that although there are positive facts on why this event is good - I want to know the views on why people think it also gives negative facts............. Myself........... i just aint interested in making jumps at a circus like this......... but as in everything - BASE is personal!! sorry no disrepect to anyone doing it! at least you are making the effort! ps) Faber - i see you stopped calling me LazyBoy!!!! PhreeZone 20 #4 August 25, 2003 Bridge Day is a lot like WFFC in that its not so much about the jumps... its about the people. Where else do you get 300+ Base jumpers in the same spot with a legal span for a day? In most places if you get 10 Base jumpers together you have a huge group. You get to see people that you maybe jumped with at different places all over the US in the same spot for once.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
Faber 0 #5 August 25, 2003 i do belive its demanded to use BASE gear after that jump.... i dont mind people looking at me jumping(like on a rock)but im not an animal in a zoo.. lucky noone force us to go there...QuoteFaber - i see you stopped calling me LazyBoy!!!! narcimund 0 #7 August 25, 2003 QuoteWhere else do you get 300+ Base jumpers in the same spot with a legal span for a day? 300 is a lot, but in Idaho you can get base jumpers together at a legal span EVERY day. Last Memorial Day I didn't count but it looked like 70 - 100 jumpers. This weekend there were at least 25 - 30 including two broad daylight first jump courses with 4 students each. Next weekend (Labor Day) is another great opportunity. Will there be 100? I hope so! And there are no Ashcroftian background checks in Idaho. turtlespeed 219 #9 August 25, 2003 So where else do you go to find a buch of people that you can lean on for advice? I would love to get into the sport, but am limited on the places and availability oif proper training. Bridge day would seem the ideal place to get that 1st base in. I don't think it's likely that anyone would be "forced" by pier pressure to do this. If it comes down to one's own life, I don't think it really matters what others think.I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun
airtwardo 7 #10 August 25, 2003 ...And the flaming begins! Bridge Day is an event...a 'Happening' Like all the various factions of skydiving, it means different things to different people. A hard-core BASE guy such as you may view the event as circus folly.... (Tongue firmly in cheek) I know what you mean... What's all the hubbub about this World Free Fall Convention??? I mean, what does THAT have to do with skydiving?? Sure, you get to jump out of really cool aircraft... And get to be on some technical jumps with people you just met... But, that's NOT what skydiving is REALLY like...back at the old home dropzone. If it comes down to one's own life, I don't think it really matters what others think. again i disagree............ people do things to "look cool" and with bridge day and the amount of people around i think there is a risk of this - change it to 1am with one other person on top of a 300ft A in the middle of know where - this gives you more emotional questioning................. Shotgun 1 #13 August 25, 2003 Quotechange it to 1am with one other person on top of a 300ft A in the middle of know where - this gives you more emotional questioning................. This example is also a much more dangerous jump than a 1000-ft. bridge in daylight, so it's not really a fair comparison. I don't think anyone goes to Bridge Day thinking they are going to be an experienced BASE jumper afterwards. It's a relatively safe jump for a first jump, and I think the safety record is pretty good for all the years it has been going on. Bridge Day is not what BASE jumping is all about, it is what Bridge Day is all about - that's all. No offense, but if you're not into it then just don't go. A lot of people seem to enjoy it, so why knock their fun?

Ok, I see your point. But I don't think *most* of the people going to Bridge Day are like that. The people who have that kind of attitude are just gonna be that way no matter what - take Bridge Day away and they'll go find some other object to jump once (or some other silly stunt to pull) and brag about. I do agree that is dangerous, but I don't think it has anything to do with Bridge Day specifically - it is just another example of the fact that there are idiots in this world. Treejumps 0 #21 August 25, 2003 Hey 813, Your right, there are no base jumpers at bridge day. You should go somewhere else for BD, as you would be way too cool for a boring event like BD. As I can tell by your number, you've been doing this for so long that you probably are bored by anything othen than a freefall & layout from 150' over hard earth. You would have no peers at BD from whom you could learn from, trade information, or otherwise enjoy spending time with. Just another boogie with cheap american tap beer and a campfire.
