Paulie1108 0 #1 October 7, 2011 So today I I spoke with a woman from the Jump Shack about getting my first rig for Training and my first few years of diving. btvr 0 #3 October 7, 2011 The Firebolt she recommended is a tandem canopy. The MSRP is $3300.. Check out the PD Navigator or Aerodyne Solo which are student canopies and max size is 288 and 290 sqft. They are around $1800 give or take. I'd also check out Wings containers.. New around $1400. Contact a gear dealer for more accurate pricing. A new rig should be somewhere around the $5000 range with AAD. That's if you are 265# at the time you jump. Get advice from the instructors at the DZ you are going to.

LouDiamond 1 #5 October 7, 2011 Considering that you are in effect buying a tandem rig due to your weight, those particular items are what you would need even if you don't quite make it down to 265 lbs. Given your requirements, I think you will find that is a pretty good deal seeing how that price means it will show up on your doorstep fully assembled and ready to jump. The problem with trying to piecemeal components together in the size range that you require is that not all manufacturers readily make a sport , ie: non tandem, non student, container that can fit your size canopies in them. Those that do, you will find that by the time all is said and done, the price is back to around what you were quoted and then you still have to pay a rigger to assemble the system once you receive all of the parts. Could you save some money by piece meal? Possibly but my guess is it would require a lot more work and waiting on your part and be very close in price in the end. By all means, do some shopping around and price crunching and be sure to check with the DZ you plan on jumping at if they are OK with you using your own gear for your training."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING

BlindBrick 0 #9 October 7, 2011 Another container option is something from Mirage or any other rig that's built under TSO 23B rather than 23C or D. Precision Aero makes the R-Max 288 which is rated to 317 pounds. NZ Aerosports (aka Icarus Canopies) will scale up their design to your request. For the longest time, I flew the largest non-tandem Safire II they'd ever built (269 sf), but Brian Germane tells me that they've built a couple of even bigger ones for some Aussie jumpers now. Keep in mind that at 265, you're going to be right around 300 lbs exit weight because your clothing helmet and alti will add about 10 lbs and even allowing for the lighter weight of a Racer, you're looking at around 25 lbs of rig weight. That will put you right at a 1:1 wingloading ratio on a fully elliptical canopy as a student which will make some instructors cringe. That's the only qualm I have with John and Nancy's recommendation as their gear is rock solid. They do seem a bit agressive on wingloading, when I was looking to demo a slightly smaller canopy their suggestion was that I demo a Firebolt that would have put me under a fully elliptical canopy loaded at 1.6 at 300 jumps. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
