Question about amnesia

Recommended Posts

I forgot.

No, seriously...I'm told my crappy memory has something to do with the events of the past month (no I don't mean the convention, that's got other interesting lasting effects). How long is my short term memory going to be screwy? On one hand its nice because I forget that I woke up with someone's name on my lips and I don't get a chance to be sad about it. On the other hand, I keep losing my damn keys.

When my closest friend died suddenly in a car accident, I was very down emotionally for so long. Normally, I have an impeccable memory, but I couldn't get over certain things. I kept reliving the phone call of her death and seeing her accident in my head, even though I had was not there when she died. Even the happiness of our friendship hurt so deeply to remember as I loved her so much. I finally was able to be normal, again, when my mind somehow blocked out most of the past.

I didn't even realize it at first, but yes, it happened. I lost some memory. It was self-preservation, though. I was just in too much pain mentally and emotionally for too long. Then, after a couple of years, I slowly would begin to remember some of the lost memories after many events would all come together to remind me of the past. My memory would be jogged back to the past, and it was like discovering/realizing old memories that had been in a deep sleep or fog-like state. However, all my memories of her are still not back, and it was 5 years ago on Monday that she passed away.

I think my brain is misfiring. I haven't forgotten any of the things that hurt. Unless those damn keys are bad for my mental state...
I don't mind the pain, it was worth all this to have what I had for a while. But I keep forgetting those little details, like whether or not I turned off the headlights, where I put my wallet, and other such trivial matters. Am I getting Alzheimers do you think? Seriously, this wasn't supposed to be a sad thread, just wondering if anyone knew.
Also, if you've seen a set of car keys....

It's a focus thing sweety, your brain is spending it's time and energy focusing on things, that it condsiders more important. Key are not high on it's list of things to worry about. I will pass with time, but ussaully it takes longer than you'd like, sorry :)

Sorry, sweetie, I didn't mean for it to be sad either. Anyway, that only happened to me after amost a year and a half after my friend's death.

Alzheimers...naaaah. Yup, maybe you are just a little off right now. Hey, we all misplace/forget stuff at times. Good luck with those car keys...I hate it when that happens. :S

Hang in there Jess. It's normal for your brain to be doing those funky things right now. I hope you're talking to a therapist. If you're not, perhaps you should find one. And always, if there's anything i can do (other than find your keys), lemme know. *hugs*

Just remember two things:

1. That which does not kill us makes us stronger, and
2. This, too, shall pass.

It's just preoccupation; you aren't concentrating on the keys or wallet or headlights...you're focusing on your pain. It just takes time, and although the pain may not disappear, some things, like trivial "where did I put this" problems will.
Just hang in there, and don't worry too much, I expect it's natural.

I HATE this expression. What a load of crap.

Anyway, memory loss can be caused by grief and is only temporary.

As long as you aren't forgetting important things that could endanger you or others, like going out with something burning on the stove, you'll be ok in time.

It's really frustrating though so try to relax and make lists of important things you don't want to forget.

Andrea

Okay, well admittedly, it's not my favorite, either. But it's true. Every problem you resolve, every obstacle you overcome prepares you better for the next time.

Muj, love, I remember after splitting with my ex, and moving, that I was trying to put in a change of address.

It took three tries - 3 tries - to get it right. Each time, I would forget something, and turn in the note to the post office. one time, I forgot the actual street address...just submitted "Burbank, CA".:S

I had no understanding of it at that time...but what seems to happen is that we drop little, inconsequential things out of our head when we are looking at survival and recovery.

Give yourself permission to forget things, take a little extra time when doing things, and don't worry too much about this. It's NOT alzheimers or early senility...it's grief.

Many hugs to you - and yes, I seem to have forgotten to pm you back from the other day - and no time right now, so we'll talk on Tuesday, alright? My bad. See? Even I forget important stuff right now! LOL, and big gigantic moonpie hugs to you!!

Ciels-
Michele
