Great thread, with lots of great genre knowledge on display.

I can only imagine that our Arthur is actually sitting in his underoos with nothing else on but that helmet setting the lights up 'just so' so that he can look supercoolio in his new icon.

As for 2001, what an epic film. Especially the attention to detail regarding science. I'll never forget, it was re-released to the big screen in 1979 or 1980, and I took a date to see it and she slept through the whole thing.

No second date.

To get really anal, Chris... "my God, it's full of stars" is only in the book version of 2001, not the movie. It is put in to 2010, which i watched 20 minutes off and then shut off because i got sick of it. From what i understand, Kubrick had the sets to 2001 destroyed so that a sequel could never be made....

I think I said that the line was in 2010. Hmmm...I'll have to go back and re-read.

Underoos....what a great name. Do you remember Garanimal clothes for boys? My mom used to buy those for my little brother. :P

Ok, sorry to hijack the thread. Where were we....oh yeah, back to that silly sci fi movie. It can't hold a candle to "Notting Hill" though. ;)

Sci Fi sucks....Chic flicks rule.

Ever see Bicentennial Man?

Ahhh, the sci-fi chick flick.

I actually enjoyed that movie, as did my wife.

AI, now that one I loved, and my wife hates. Oh, well no accounting for taste------she won't jump either.

Actually I thought both Bicentennial Man and AI were pretty good science fiction. I had a little problem with the ending of both of them, but overall I thought they had some interesting things to say.

My only negative comment is that AI shows the continuing infatuation that Spielberg has for Pinocchio as so much of the story line was lifted right out of it. Which, I guess, only points out how much cross-over there can be between genres.

You know, Quade, I never thought along those lines about AI before.

Dayum, now I'm off in my own little word, pondering the depths of life itself.

Actually, I never really realized the Pinocchio links until now.

Wow, deep.

Actually, I think you get the right drift of the film itself, RevJim. It caused me to ponder life itself for days after seeing it.

Haven't we all longed deeply for something so precious in our own lives? An unanswered quest, a deep desire, a ache so broad and deep to almost cause us pain?

In all actuality, I'm willing to bet "yes". I know I have/do.

Enter skydiving. It may not be exactly what I was looking for, but it sure helps to fill a void!

Correct. Read up on the production - you'll see that the book and the film were written at the same time, and story ideas / film ideas went back and forth between Kubrick and Clarke. An amazing collaboration!

Kubrick had all the sets and especially the miniatures (and all the tech drawings and specs) destroyed so that they couldn't be recycled and used by MGM (or whoever else bought them) in some other project wholly unrelated to 2001.

Don't forget, set and prop recycling was (and is!) rampant in show biz, but you don't really notice it so much with everyday things (contemporary or Western stuff, etc.), but it stands out like a sore thumb if it's retread SF - think of all the times you saw that cheapskate Irwin Allen re-use set dressings and props in his shows!

Kubrick didn't want that to happen to 2001.

It also goes to show that from Ancient Greece onward, there really aren't that many stories to tell in theater, just different ways to tell them.

Computer geek trivia from 2001.
How did HAL get his name?
It is one letter off. H->I, A->B, L->M
Coincidence? I think not.
It was tough admitting that I knew that. :D

It was a coincidence, according to Clarke, but it doesn't look like it, considering the prominent placement of "IBM" throughout the picture.

More interesting was the prominent display of "ATM" and "COM" on the monitors. Now, this film was made in 1968, were the ATM machines at our banks and the internet .com thought of by this year (or at least their names here)? :P

To be fair, much of the stuff in his older books has come to pass. He predicted a future that more or less arrived, and is writing the same sort of stuff - it's just that his setting has caught up with him.
