mouth 0 #1 August 19, 2003 I simply can't believe the ambulance ride from Perris Valley Skydiving to Menefee Valley Medical Center cost $922.00 and none of it is covered by my stinking insurance. Give me a break...you can see the place from the dropzone. That is robbery in my book. -- Hot Mama At least you know where you stand even if it is in a pile of shit. kevin922 0 #3 August 19, 2003 i used to work on one.. yes it is nuts how much they charge.. i think it was something like $400 just to get in the back of the thing, that's before we went anywhere :) I moved here to VA and found out something crazy! It's *FREE* for fairfax county (where i live) residents to be transported by ambulance.
TequilaGirl 0 #4 August 19, 2003 That does seem a bit high - most of my ambulance rides were in the $500 to $600 range....and my insurance covered it.....less my 10%.....
alanab 0 #5 August 19, 2003 my god! i thought mine was expensive at almost $500, but i guess not! mines not covered by insurance wither, go figure, right? but if it makes you feel ANY better, the ER sent me home that night after 4 hours witha sprained wrist. i woke up the next morning in more pain than before and had it re-xrayed (somewhere else) and i had a broken elbow! can we say lawsuit??HA! i wish

jmpnkramer 0 #7 August 19, 2003 Uh yeah there little lady. Try $5,300 for an airlift from Z-Hills to Tampa. Not even a 10-min flight. $300 for an ambulance just because it showed up. Ambulance ride at Quincy was over $1,000. I would have to look at records to get the exact amount. Just think these people are actually supposed to be helping you. Instead they are raping your wallet. Nowadays if you do not pay or can't they are kind enough to put it on your credit report so that you have even moree issues in life. Yep this is why our health care system is all ASSED UP. The reason that people suffer before going to the Doctor or hospital. Such is life! mouth 0 #9 August 19, 2003 I can so relate since I first injured it on Sunday and went and had XRays. The Dr said he didn't think it was broken but to come back in 10 days if it still hurt. 3 days later I figured since I could stand the pain and the Dr said it wasn't broken I'd jump. I HEARD it pop under canopy, took the downwind and KNEW it was broken then without him even looking at it, thus the ambulance ride. I still think $922 is a little much for a mile down the street. Thankfully the fire dept hasn't sent me a bill for dispatching their guys too. They were lots nicer too. -- Hot Mama At least you know where you stand even if it is in a pile of shit. dgskydive 0 #13 August 19, 2003 The Fire men are nicer cause they get good practice out here somtimes. We have them trained not to cut off rigs or jumpsuits with out another jumper around. IT's pretty neat to hear them tell each other not to cut anything. "Let the skydivers do it". they don't even have to be told. Sucks about your bill!Dom

PhillyKev 0 #17 August 19, 2003 Yeah, it's pricey...but do you think that everyone else should subsidize the ambulance and airlift rides taken by those of us who choose to participate in activities where we are more likely to need those services? mountainman 0 #18 August 19, 2003 Wow, Mouth ! I am just curious... why did you take the ambulance (or even call it) to the hospital ? I may have missed it, but didn't see why you didn't get a ride. I don't think that is the point. I think they are wondering why they charge so damn much for a 1 mile ride. Mouth... you should have called a LIMO for the ride. It would have cost you $100 MAX. lewmonst 0 #20 August 19, 2003 yeah, that's just dumb. i'm scared to see what my leg is gonna cost from Rantoul. The dumbasses took me to a hospital that didn't have a trauma center, just so i'd get the xrays and shit there then put me in another ambulance to the good hospital, a block away... I have insurance luckily, but i'm afraid i maxed it out. the scary thing is they did the same thing to my swooper friend, who i hung out with in the hospital, and he doesn't have insurance and he was there for 11 days. ouch. i can't even imagine. peace lewhttp://www.exitshot.com

PhillyKev 0 #22 August 19, 2003 QuoteI don't think that is the point. I think they are wondering why they charge so damn much for a 1 mile ride. You're not paying for a 1 mile ride. You're paying for the purchase and maintenance of the equipment, training of the people, their insurance, etc. It's not like they're taxis running around picking people up. They're probably sitting around a good amount of time waiting for someone to need them. The money for that time has to come from somewhere. In the burbs around here a lot of the ambulance services are non-profit and staffed by volunteers. The money they charge is what they need to stay in business. nubain1 0 #25 August 19, 2003 OK I know there will be hell raised over this.BUt here goes any way. If you were transported by a county service then it is understandable that the bill is high like that.During budget sessions EMS is usually the first to get their budget cut long before anybody else gets it.Where I used to work at, our budget was cut every year and usually about 4 months before the start of the new fiscal year we were out of money. We have been told before that we would have to start reusing single use supplies. It had even been suggested to take the guaze we used and wash it to use it again.Or reuse endotracheal tubes after they had been pulled out of the pt at the hosp. The procurment supervisor we had was the tightest person I have ever seen with money ands would always buy the cheapest supplies possible. We had run down equipment and trucks were always breaking down.We had some trucks that were so bad that you had to wear your rain gear on the inside of the truck whenever it rained. We had two different rates that was charged. One was a BLS rate that was $350 plus supplies for a basic EMT to ride and then there was a ALS rate of $450 plus supplies for a Medic to ride. And there are a lot of places where EMT's and medics barely make above minimum wage for all the shit we have to go through. All the training, the long hours the thankless people we take care.I have been spit onand punched,I've had knives pulled on me and I've been shot at a few times and all I was trying was trying to help the person who called for help.I used to have to wear a bullet proof vest to work it was so bad.most of the people I know that work in EMS have to work 2 sometimes 3 jobs total just so they can provide for thier familes. Now if the bill is to much then write to congress to put a end to EMS and we can go back to the days of having a hearse show up and nobody on the hearse having any training at all. They can throw you in the back and if you die then your in the right vehicle to be taken to the funeral home instead of the hosp. I have seen both sides of the coin.I have worked in EMS for 10 years and in that time I have been a pt in the back of a ambulance a few times. I have even gotten billed from the service that I worked for after being transported to the hosp.So I know how high those bills can be.But I also know that the cost of life would be even higher if there was'nt a group of dedicated professionals out there doing there best to save lives. SO if you want to be pissed at someone for you bill being so high then blame the people that make medical supplies and charge so much for them that the charges have to be passed on to you.But don't blame the people that are there to take care of you when you need it.
