A text message is far too short for an unestablished line of communication.

I believe they'd prefer to be thought of as a human rather than the recipient of junk mail.

you've got a point. i'll probably give a call tonight or maybe tomorrow. i've just sent her a text last night and i was wondering if it's too quick to call her tonight or should i wait till tomorrow.

Yes, it's insincere!

Think about it this way. I could set up a text message template and send it out to 100 different phone numbers with just a few keystrokes.

Wow. I know I'd feel special if I got one of those!

It's just like spam email. Or at least, that's how it -should- be looked at if you don't already have an established dating connection with the person.

LAME! Only ask in person for first date. Second or more phone call is OK.

I don't know about that. I once asked a girl out via email. We are now married.

(The rest of the story is that the email never actually resulted in a date. It was a couple years later in an elaborate maneuver that involved Motrin, a sweatshirt, a hot tub, and of course, alcohol.)

Don't even think about it.

If you can't ask me in person, don't bother. If you are not close enough to ask in person at least let me hear your voice. Just my opinion as a female.

Not true. If you ask her out...look into her eyes, speak from your heart and smile.

Hey Vanilla, your avatar stared at me more than 6 secs...I'M GONNA SUE YOU!!! :D:D:D

Just kidding.

You meet someone in a club get there number. how do you ask them for a date in person if the only way you have at contacting them is a number =)

Does it look like I am staring at you wherever you go in the room? LOL! Hmmm...I kind of hate this avatar. It's too close up. I'll change it to something else. Thanks for the idea. Now, what should I change it to...

Dunno, just make sure you show your beautiful smile. :$

I knocked back one of the hottest, coolest chicky babes I have ever met because she insisted on communicating via sms(text) over where our first date would be. Is it too much too ask?

I think SMS is cool.... you can say and suggest many things you wouldn't say... and often ends in the way you expected ;)

1st Date? Call. Women like to make excuses or reject you in person.:P

If you've been dating for several years... I see no problem with a text message.

I think if the person likes you though, that they'll probably go along with whatever medium you choose to use.
