dropdeded 0 #1 August 12, 2003 Student has cutaway on first jump, aff level one. Broken steering line, but an otherewise fully inflated canopy, cutaway at 4,000 ft, student lands at dz, instructor follows main and SHE is picked up by a friend from the dz shortly thereafter. Pretty simple actually but this mornings paper was just a little off. Below is this mornings article. I dont know who these people talked to, but its not as far off as some, but still off. This kid sure was jazzed about his bonus ride Below is the article. dropdeded --------------------------------------- Reported sky-diving death turns out to be false alarm The Bakersfield Californian Sunday August 10, 2003, 09:40:17 PM The Taft Fire Department responded Saturday afternoon to a report of a sky diver falling to his death after his parachute failed to open. But when firefighters arrived on scene, only a parachute had fallen, not a person. What happened, explained Fire Capt. Ken Scott, was actually fairly routine, if not commonplace. A jumper had flown up to 11,000 feet in a Cessna 182 with Sky Dive Taft, and jumped, like normal. After about 65 seconds of free-fall, he pulled his chute. But, as sometimes occurs, the chute didn't open. So the diver cut off his first chute and pulled the second, which opened and lowered him safely to the ground, albeit a bit south of his intended landing, Scott said. "Whoever saw the chute probably thought somebody fell from the sky," the fire captain said. "We've had hot doggers out here who've cratered and broken bones," Scott said. "But never from their chute not opening." Sky Dive Taft has never had an accident from a parachute malfunction, both business and fire officials said. That'd be bad for business, Scott said. "No returns, you know." At the end of the afternoon, a Taft firefighter found the jumper walking down Petroleum Club Road, smiling, his emergency chute folded over his arm.------------------------------------------ The Dude Abides. -

dropdeded 0 #3 August 12, 2003 11,000 ft, 65 seconds of freefall, wouldnt that create a crater? dropdeded------------------------------------------ The Dude Abides. -
Blahr 0 #4 August 12, 2003 at 120 mph a jump from 11,000 ft to the ground would take 66 seconds. So after that 65 second freefall he still had 1 whole second to whip it out at 300 ft I usually try to open a little higher than that myself but I'm not very experienced

DYEVOUT 0 #7 August 12, 2003 QuoteSo after that 65 second freefall he still had 1 whole second to whip it out at 300 ft I'm thinking vented BASE canopy, slider off. That woulda been a firm opening. ----------------=8^)---------------------- "I think that was the wrong tennis court."

But that whole part of the story is a bit off. He landed at the dz, his instructor followed the main, and it wasnt a "he". I think whoever wrote the story was just a bit confused dropdeded------------------------------------------ The Dude Abides. -
